    Silly question

I was looking at a photo of an old George Shroyer rifle. It was unusual for a York gun as it had double set triggers but what really threw me was the use of keys or wedges rather than pins. When did keys enter into common use? Ray

    Frog Lube?

I just saw this stuff. It has NO water OR petroleum products in it and fights rust as it lubes. They have a paste. Maybe a decent humid climate patch lube? Just thinking. Ray

    GRRW Indian Trade Rifle

I talked with Bill Brandenberg back when GRRW was new. He explained that they built their "Leman Indian Trade rifle" as they did for several reasons. Theirs had a 1 1/16" straight barrel in .58 or .62 caliber and brass fittings. The normal barrel length was 30" but most were from 30-34" in...

    What is the Grouseland Rifle?

It looks very PA in design but is a percussion. Is it a very late Lancaster or some other school? Any idea on the specs? Ray

    Source of nice Lehigh rifle?

A few months ago somebody posted a picture of a really nice Lehigh Valley (Rupp?) with either a curly cherry or reddish stained curly maple stock. It had some carving a bit of wire inlay. I was wondering who had built that one. Ray

    SC "Gamecock Rifle"?

Seen this one on NRA News. Any info on this gun and the specs? Are there enough over the counter parts to build a copy or does it require a custom lock and other parts? -Ray

Guns & Ammo promotes REAL BP!!!!

I forgot the author's name but Guns and Ammo has a whole article promoting REAL black powder OVER the substitutes!!! I think an editor got food poisoning and while he was getting his stomach pumped somebody slipped this one in!! Remember that G&A USED to promote all kinds of black powder...

    Easter ham?

I have a micro-convection oven. I want to bake a 3lb. Krakus ham. I like to add sliced pineapple, cloves and ham glaze. If I use the low mix (Bake) setting how many minutes for 3lbs. of ham? If I use it without the microwaves and just straight convection, what temp and how long? -Ray

    Bedford period?

I read that the Bedford rifles were made almost to the 20th Century in percussion. When did they really start to emerge in the flint period? Most are droopy looking and have fairly long barrels up to 46" if I'm not mistaken. Since they seem to be late flint rifles is it safe to assume that most...

    Jug choke?

Can anyone explain a jug choke? How does it work? Can you load without a lot of effort and in a 20 ga. bore what is its range? What about in 12 or 10 gauge? -Ray

    ? on "A" weights

LC Rice once told me he never recommended that weight even for a .32 caliber. The reason is that they are more likely to get bent in shipping. I suppose you could ship them with a fat dowel in the bore. Then he said that a tiny warp in the stock can also bend them. I am not sure about that but...

    Silver Bullets and flint?

On History Channel they "proved" you can't use silver bullets. Maybe but THEIR test was bogus. To recreate a shooting by a French coureur de bois they used a MARLIN .444 with cast silver and lead bullets. The argument was that the harder silver would not engage the rifling properly and the...

    NP-3 for "in the white"?

I just got what MAY be a brilliant idea. I know that a lot of shooters of modern guns have them coated with Robar's NP-3 which is an electroless nickel. This stuff is tuff, corrosion resistant and has a dull silver sheen. To have an in the white barrel and lock that would be easier to keep rust...

    Wit's end with patchbox latch!

I have a VERY nice TVM Tennessee rifle with an oval patchbox. The part of the latch that grips the lid had snapped off. Funny it was just sitting in a dry corner of the house all the time. Anyway Toni sent me a new latch but it was too short so I tried ever so gently to bend it out a bit and...

    "A" weight barrels?

When I suggested to LC Rice that one day I wanted a long slender rifle (or 3 or 4) with "A" weight barrels he said he always counsels against it. LC says that they almost always end up bent even if they go in straight. Something about the wood swelling. What has been the experience around here...

    Bad DVD transfer

I just got "Follow the River" which was a cable flick about 15 years ago with Sheryl Lee and Rene O'Connor. OK flick and based partly on real people and a real incident but the transfer bloweth mightily!! In any scene with fast action or many characters moving about the image becomes...

    Jojoba oil?

This is often sold as "synthetic sperm oil" and it's actually from a nut. Pronounced "ho ho bah" it is organic and contains no water but can mix with water. Has anyone tested this? Just curious. -Ray

    Mineral Oil?

I hear that Ballistol is mostly mineral oil. If that's true how would you mix up a batch of "home made" Ballistol using mineral oil and water? Would mineral oil be a viable wet lube in very cold weather? I like Mink Oil and Neatsfoot myself. -Ray
