Slow progress on my .40 build.

Looking good! I wish I had a milling machine and metal lathe and knew how to use them. Very handy to have!

Ram Rod Hole drifted up to barrel channel

After some further checks by drilling through the bottom of the barrel channel and measuring the thickness of the web with the ram rod installed. It appears I actually have close to 3/16" at the point where the front lock bolt will be installed. I'm thinking between tapering the ram rod and...

Ram Rod Hole drifted up to barrel channel

While making the ram rod channel, I made a scraper out of an old file that had shoulders on either side of the rounded portion so that when I got to proper depth it would go no deeper. I also used a depth gauge to check the entire length to make sure it wasn't sloping one way or the other. I...

Ram Rod Hole drifted up to barrel channel

Dave, thanks so much for explaining how you go about the repair. It comforts me to know you have dealt with this several times. As I pointed out this is my first time fully inletting the barrel and drilling a ramrod hole. And I am using a swamped barrel. You mentioned drawings. I did order...

Ram Rod Hole drifted up to barrel channel

Did you fill any of the errant hole or just let the wood plate fill in the majority of it?

Ram Rod Hole drifted up to barrel channel

Yes. I agree. I doubt I will have to drill much if any at all. I should be able to make the channel from inside the barrel channel and work my way out.

Ram Rod Hole drifted up to barrel channel

Back in December I started a new build. I have done two kit builds and decided to try my hand at a blank. I'm building a left hand Isaac Haines style rifle. This is my first time inletting the barrel and ram rod channel. Of course I had to get a swamped barrel for my first one! That went...

    Flintlock double

Very nice! I have a buddy that has all the metal parts and no stock. He wants me to build him a gun. Have not done a double barrel yet. Yours is inspiring!

    Interested in starting engraving

"Engraving Historic Firearms" by John Schippers is a great book if you can find it. I am the early stages of learning to engrave. A couple years ago I took a 3 day class given by Mike Lee at The Log Cabin in Lodi, Ohio. Wow! As others have said, learning to sharpen your gravers effectively...

    Inletting a fowler buttplate

Interesting comments about the top screw. I looked a many examples and I can't tell you where I saw the screw in the tang and I chose to go that route. I have a set of English Fowler plans that show the top screw in the bend which seems like the proper way to do it. Thanks, Dave, for all the...

    Inletting a fowler buttplate

Ganggreen, I just completed the Chambers Fowler. On this kit, the top of the butt plate is precut which, in my opinion, can make it more difficult to "land" in that precut area perfectly. I worked from the back in and then down. Also, I placed a screw lower on the back and one on the top...

Second Build - Chambers 20 ga Penn Fowler Lefty

Thank you, Crewdawg. As you all know there are things in a build you wish you had done a little better or a little different but I have to remind myself I'm still pretty new at this. Overall I am very pleased and I certainly did not rush this project! :)

Second Build - Chambers 20 ga Penn Fowler Lefty

Finally finished my Chambers Fowler. Had posted some discussion in the Tru-Oil thread about finishing walnut stocks. I used many light coats of Tru-Oil wet sanding after the first couple coats. Rubbed it down with 0000 steel wool soaked in motor oil to take the shine off.

    Hot off the bench.....

Looks really nice, Ganggreen! What kind of finish are you planning to put on it?

    Tru Oil?

Thank you, Dave. Your comments have helped. The butt of the stock has a lot of figure that I want to stand out. I may just apply several thin coats. I will post pics once I start the process.

    Tru Oil?

So, I am getting ready to finish a Chambers Pennsylvania Fowler with a walnut stock. My intentions are to use Tru Oil. This is the first walnut stock I've done. I've had some say to lightly sand it while the first coat is still wet to create a "slurry" to fill the pores. I've had others say...

Dave, That's a beautiful piece of work. God has blessed you with a true gift of skill and patience!

    Undercoating a pinned barrel?

You're exactly right, 58 Caliber. That's what I was thinking of.
