    Need new nipples

I checked here, with my Mitutoyo's and a 1/4-20 machine screw measures .248" And that is what I program a thread major for in the CNC lathe. I'm guessing his calipers are inaccurate maybe. He mentions a 1/4-20 measuring .242" unless it's threaded rod or a carriage bolt, it should be larger...

For the Tennessee Rifle fans, #138

Oh I'm not upset about it, just pointing out, it isn't worth all the hype. Stopping a screw in that rotation is really a bit pointless. The wood shrinking and swelling over time, they won't be aligned for long. If they are properly tightened anyway. Some were making it sound as though this was...

    Need new nipples

I had to replace the nipples in my old belgium double as well. They used some oddball thread, neither english or metric, probably whitworth or something equally obscure. I ran a thread gauge in and the lead is 24 tpi and the major diameter is .264". Believe it or not, that is a thread size for...

    How fancy for hunting?

It is difficult for us to understand (IF I have this right) the mindset. Labor was cheap, someone with a knack for carving and can work expeditiously, could have performed even complex patterns rather quickly. If you do something everyday and that is all you do, you learn tricks and develop...

For the Tennessee Rifle fans, #138

That's a nice rifle. Although, I think there is a bit too much emphasis being put on lining some screw slots up. Like it separates a good build and a great build. Take a single flute countersink and play with the depth until the screw clocks in the right rotation, not that big of a deal. -Ron

    How fancy for hunting?

Look at anything else from this era. Take the steam engines of the time, virtually every casting that survives today has some sort of ornamental features. These were just nasty old beasts of burden, nothing as prestigious or respected as the "family rifle". Look at furniture of the time, many...

    Couldn't resist...

Thanks Paul.. Seems a silly law, a person is upset with someone, so they might order a flintlock to kill them with?? Ahh bureaucrats, you have to love them. -Ron

    Couldn't resist...

"Michigan"?? I am not aware of any restriction on mail order muzzleloaders here to Michigan. They must have that mixed up with Nitro powder guns. I've ordered guns and had them delivered here before??? That is puzzling why they would have that. Anybody know why they would be saying that about...

    Where to start

I've thought about a project like this as well, two things to consider. It is going to be very heavy, especially a double rifle, packing a heavy gun for any length of time, quickly diminishes it's appeal. And generally, any device that serves two purposes, rarely does both well. I use the...

What's the purpose to draw file a barrel?

The name on the bottom of the barrel, as I've always understood was the builder of the gun? The one I built has a GM barrel, I stamped my name in the bottom of it. I built it? If I ever get amnesia, should be handy. This old Percussion Belgium double shotgun I have, has all sorts of marks on...

    Barrel fit on Chambers Kit?

""As for the guys who posted pictures of those "mandrels", I assume those are for straight barrels?"" If you're referring to the sanding tool I posted, no I used it on a swamped barrel. Where the flat gets wider, just cock it slightly. The paper should be no wider than the narrowest portion of...

    Barrel fit on Chambers Kit?

When we bought kits back in the 70's and 80's, they took virtually no fitting whatsoever. The lock and barrel were generally just a push fit. I can't understand why they cannot do that now?? Unless it just comes down to cost, everyone wanting a 400 dollar kit with quality parts, doesn't leave...

    Underlugs - staples vs. dovetails?

I'm pretty confident, I know how they are doing these swamp barrels. In a rotary 4th axis and simply side milling the profile. They should leave a thick spot on one flat at the center lug area. There simply is not enough material there to be removing anymore to install a lug on some calibers. -Ron

    Barrel fit on Chambers Kit?

Pecatonica shipped my gun with the barrel in the stock, ahem, I won't go into too much detail about that. Anyways, make one of these, it works great for opening up the sides of the channel. Easy to control the amount of wood removed and keeps the sidewall square to the bottom. Just super glue...

    Underlugs - staples vs. dovetails?

It would be very easy to do on some barrels. This swamped barrel I have, I did the dovetails in a CNC mill. I started measuring at the waist, there isn't much material between the bore and the flat at that point. Especially considering the channel of the rifling. .710 at the waist, 45 cal and...

    What would you choose

I have another rifle, a fullstock Hawken. 1" barrel, 50 cal 36" long and that is one heavy gun. I like everything about it except that. My next build, I'm going 45 cal 42" long 13/16 across the flats, Green Mountain. Just for comparison, the Verner style rifle I have is 62" long the barrel is...

    What would you choose

The Rifle I just built has a 44" Green Mountain B swamped barrel on it. The weight is very nice, easy to handle. Shoots like a laser, last time I shot it, one fellow I was with had never shot a flintlock, and his first shot at 80 yards he hit a 1/2" bullseye on a 100 yard scoped rifle target...
