    18th Century Artisan's Show

The new location was in a single room and at least 50% larger than the combined (4) rooms at the previous location. Wide aisles, lots of light, easy access are all positives.

    Question on cherry wood

I put cherry scales on a knife about 10 years back, finished with Minwax tung oil or BLO, don't recall, but it never darkened despite having in the front window for weeks. I would expect some scraps to come along with the stock to act as your test finish pieces. My suggestion would be to...

    Shipping issues… is this normal?

The label that I attached was printed from my printer and SCANNED by the local shipping agent who gave me a receipt. I had printed and attached similar labels in the past and never had an issue with packages going to Ohio and Texas.

    Shipping issues… is this normal?

I shipped a package from central Pa to northern Idaho about 6 weeks back. It went via Fedex since it was very long, but packed well and the entire package and label was covered in clear tape. Fedex claimed the label was unreadable in travelling 30 miles or less from the drop off point to their...

    Gunmaker's Fair 2022!

This particular event is a combination of gunshow and artisans fair with scheduled seminars. While the emphasis is towards recreating rifles and smoothbores of years gone by, there were horn makers, shooting pouch makers, knife makers, pottery makers, and even original rifles on display. Some...

    Kempton Gunmaker's Fair; Who's Going?

I was there today and will say the new venue is sooooo much better! There is lots of parking, and most of the vendors are inside 2 adjoining buidings on dry concrete. It would have been nice if there were some large fans to move some air, but the concensus was that it is a success. I did find...

    Evening Decompression

I put a lot of stuff on when I was done at the southern Va house, and it kept the chiggers at bay. I still had a couple of ticks crawling on me. The ticks are bad here in southern Pa.

    Last of the Mohicans Rifle

M T Wickham was John Armstrong's first apprentice circa 1798 and went on to work at Harper's Ferry Arsenal. The "1816 flintlock" was a military arm, and not one of Wickham's early personal works.

Dixie Gun Works Tennessee Mountain Rifle

I've owned two of the .50 flintlocks. Foolishly, I sold or traded the first back in the early '80s. I bought another some 20 years ago, and still have it. The worst part about mine is that the frizzen was a sloppy fit and would dribble powder. I put a bead of JB Weld on it and filed it flush...

    Smoothbore "Rifles"

"Smooth rifles" were more common than most folks think. They have the attributes of a rifle-cheek piece, patchbox, trigger guard, rear sight-but simply lack rifling. original, about 45cal, click to expand

    cherry stock finish

WEAR GLOVES, I prefer the chemical resistant variety, and DO NOT breathe the vapors(!!!!) when mixing lye with water. ALWAYS put lye in water, and then stir until its disolved. Its best to do this outdoors. ONE tablespoon of lye in 8oz of water is plenty strong. Apply it liberally and watch...
