    The errant ball.

Nice shooting Birdwatcher. Having competed in NRA Highpower matches before, I really like seeing offhand shots that are touching. And flyers are never your fault, always blame the equipment :haha:

Do I need to temper the frizzen?

Thanks for the advice. I'll leave it be. Can't wait to touch it off for real soon!

Do I need to temper the frizzen?

I'm using a Davis english fowler lock, and have tested it and it sparks well as delivered. Do I need to temper or harden the frizzen though? I have not loaded and shot the piece yet but have flashed two primer loads in testing and they touch off fine. The frizzen face shows very very shallow...

    Transport case?

Wow, those are great cases. I'm getting one of those for sure. Thanks for the advice.

    Transport case?

How do you guys protect your pieces when you drive to the range or field for a shooting session? At about 48" long I have no case that my fowler will fit in and I want to keep it from getting banged up in the truck.

    Sitting Fox Muzzleloaders

I'm just now finishing a kit from Ray at Sitting Fox. He is a nice guy. The kit arrived from another muzzle shop, I forget which right now, I may have saved the box, in another state. Stock inlet was fine to my absolute beginner eyes and the front sight was soldered on competently too. The...

    Cleaning a flintlock barrel

When I visited Ft. Ticonderoga last summer I saw the young musket demo guys remove the locks and then pour boiling water down the muzzles, leaning the piece against the wall and letting it all "pee" out the touch hole. They swabbed and and flushed until they were satisfied. I did not hang...

    Enrgaving

Fantastic advice Dave. I'm at the point in my project now where some embellishment might be appropriate. You are right, I can't let the "what if's" scare me away from trying and learning. Scrap brass here I come.

    Predicting stock grain appearance?

The mineral spirits trick worked great. It also revealed a ton of marks left from the pre-carve process that I'll have to clean up too :hmm:

    Predicting stock grain appearance?

No after effect worries doing that when it comes time to actually stain and finish it later? I'm excited to try and get a glimpse of what I have using these tricks.

    Predicting stock grain appearance?

Wondering if there is a way to somehow get an idea what a stock will look like after staining, etc...before you actually stain it? Is there any way to see what kind of grain pattern you've got? Damp rag maybe? TIA, Geoff

    Kit gun?

If you do order from Sitting Fox, make VERY SURE upfront that all the parts for the kit you choose are available now for shipment. Same goes for any supplier, but I think that SF does not stock much of anything and simply orders as needed from a middle man. This is from personal experience.

How do you measure and carry your shot?

    That's a fantastic looking kit!

    Builder Sitting Fox?

Wow, never heard of that club. I belong to Hampden Rifle and Pistol club. You guys have a website?

    Blade Stock

Or use it with the aim of refining your filing and finishing techniques for cheap as practice.

    Builder Sitting Fox?

I'm not really worried about the deal going bad. I understand how cottage businesses work, and also that some people are not internet/on-line 24-7 either. I sure fall into that camp. I'll call him maybe next week just to touch base. I've willed myself to be patient stress free on this project...

    Builder Sitting Fox?

I've got a kit on order with Ray. Great guy on the phone. But he has not answered an e-mail from me for 8 days now. May not be an issue, but it does kind of bother me. I know he winters in Florida and may be headed back to Michigan now. It's been roughly 6 weeks since I placed my order.

    Late 1600's fowler lock style?

I mailed a check to Ray at Sitting Fox today for his club butt kit. Yeah, the lock is still not late 1600's, but that was too specific a requirement for my first ML piece. I'm going to enjoy building this and learn from it. Ray said I'd get it in about 3 weeks, so now the hard part begins...

    Build along: S.Mtn.Rifle: Inletting lockplate

Great info form all of you guys. When my kit is in my hands I'll be reviewing this all again before I lift a chisel or chuck up a bit. Well done!
