Hawken Rifles, What's All The Hoopla?!

Too bad the English Sporting Rifle never really caught on in the US… excellent balance of power and weight in a simple and elegant design.

Considering the raw material, the method produces generally excellent results.

    New Revolver To The Stable

Came across this little Walker nugget. An original with a novel way of solving the loading lever dropping. Cut a channel in the side of the plunger and install a spring which would be depressed by the thumb before ramming the bullet home.

    Arbor Problem?

True enough. The USMC will drill things like this into your head so solidly that you will hear the instructions loud and clear sixty years later… maybe Army Sergeants just didn’t drill that effectively back in the day… This revolver was probably sold to General Diaz of the Mexican Army and...

    Arbor Problem?

No but Uberti are still better fit and much closer to the original size and shape of the original Colt. So, I’d still pay more for the uberti. If you want to fix the arbor length, it’s really a simple operation taking no time or particular skill.

    Arbor Problem?

It’s a shame there’s no more documentation from the period but one of the War Department’s chief complaints with the Colts was the wear and replacement of wedges. They ordered thousands of replacement frames and separately wedges. I’m sure some wedges were lost as well as battered and requiring...

How far down do you clean?

The primary function of gun oil is to lubricate moving parts. Secondary and almost co-equal in importance is to protect the metal from corrosion. I don’t think silicone oil would provide the protection you’re looking for. But I could be wrong about that…

Me too, but of course crotchless chaps is a redundancy…

    Arbor Problem?

Bois d’arc is easily worked with the common tools used for tillering bows. It is hard, very hard wood and when seasoned very sharp tools are a must but a good sharp drawknife, farriers (and other) rasps, and scrapers are the main tools.

    Did I ruin grips

Yes! There is no good reason to submerge these guns in any liquid, hot or cold… let alone with the stocks in place.😂

If you trim the lower lug in the lathe, what kind of cut are you taking? Thanks,

1:28 twist for conicals mold recommendations

In a pistol with its lower velocity, I suspect 1:28 would suit a patched ball very well.

Is Cylinder Reaming a Necessary Thing?

Are you happy with the gun and its accuracy? Maybe shoot a couple hundred balls before thinking about modifications. I have replica guns I’ve shot for 30/40 years without touching anything.

    Relined barrel proble

He’s done a couple like that for me, .450/.458”. And two .400/.408. Very good shooters and now I’m thinking about a conical shooting .32 for picket pins and coyotes.

Flintolock pistol rises, never hit the target :-(

They do. If you have a revolver sighted to shoot one bullet of, say 200 grains, around 1200 fps, and then load another, maybe 275 grains at 950, the difference is startling. And it’s an excellent excuse to load and shoot…
