    Range report

Well, I made it to the range today to try out my Danny Caywood Jug Choked barrel I got back a couple of weeks ago. It DID make a difference! I tried several loads with 3F Swiss and the SKY Chief methods. My old 62 cal like it as did my 12. This 16 did not for some reason. Could be due to the...

    Brass 40 cal mold

Picked up this interesting brass mold in 40 cal. I think its probably modern. How would one use it? I suppose it lies flat on a surface, the lead is poured in to two holes, wait a minute, turn it over and pour the other two holes, wait a bit, turn the handle until it will come apart, dump the...

    16 Gauge starting load

Now that I've sent the barrel off to get jug choked, what would you guys suggest as a starting load using say, No. 5 shot? Never had any experience with a 16 ga before. This should be fun.

    Jug Choke

Besides Danny Caywood, does anyone know of anyone who jug chokes? Would like to just send the barrel if possible. 16 Guage.

    New Smoothbore

I have a new smoothbore in 16 ga. Before, with my 20, I was shooting a skychief load using 80 gr of 2F and 80 gr of #6 shot ( about 11/4 oz). Does anyone use a 16 for turkey? Should I keep the same load or increase powder and shot. Suggested volumes ?

    Nipples for my SXS

I haven't a clue as how to tell what size this old shotgun might take. The consensus here is British, 1845-1855 or thereabouts. I'd like to have a set that fits size 11 caps if possible. The ones that are on it are not original to the gun I'd say and the No. 11 Remington's and CCI's are a super...

    New to me SXS

I just acquired a nice old percussion, 12 ga. SXS that is marked Atwell on the rib close to the breech. The seller bought it in an estate sale at Friendship. Supposedly, the owner passed away and his estate was being sold. The story goes that the gun is American made and was hunted with up until...

    Serious problem...need advice

Don't want to start a flame war..not mentioning names but I could use some opinions. If this is inappropriate mods, feel free to delete it. Back in August ”˜06 I saw a gun I liked advertised for sale. I emailed the builder for more pictures and upon seeing additional pictures, saw something I...

    Screw tip...

For the horners out there who make screw tip horns, what size or sizes of taps and dies do you most commonly use? Do you use wood tap and dies or maybe pipe? Gonna try one and not sure what size and kind of tap and die set to buy.

    Shot snake or flask or?

Was wondering what you smoothbore shooters use to carry and measure your shot. I've looked at the Irish and English shot snakes and flasks, and they see to be limited to only two charges 1 1/4 and 1 1/2. They also seem a bit expensive so, what are you guys using if you don't use a snake or flask?

    Everything changed....(long)

I went to the range yesterday to try my new Swiss powder. I got 3lbs of 2F and 2lbs of 3F. I’ve been shooting Goex 3F all along and thought I’d try the Swiss to see if it was indeed a “better” powder. My normal load has been 75 gr of Goex 3F under a 490 rb with a .015 patch with Lehigh lube. My...

    Ordering powder...which?

I've been using Goex 3F in my .50 Flinter. It has 42" Colerain barrel. It didn't like Goex 2F as well as it did the 3F. Now I want to try some Swiss. For any of you Swiss shooters, do you prefer 2 or 3F in Swiss for the .50?

    ?TC ID

Is there a list posted anywhere that, based on serial number, would give an idea of when a TC Hawken was made? Did TC even do that? I realize that they preceeded the serial number with a "K" if it was a kit, but was just wondering if I could date the one I have somehow. I had forgotten I even...

    Sights

I have a 1" long dovetailed rear site on my longrifle. I'd like to try a new rear sight I saw except that it only fits a 1/2" dovetail. I don't want to cut a plug and file a new dovetail so I was wondering if I could adapt the new one. I believe both sights are cast metal. (The one I have is...

To flush or not to flush...

Put this in the "for what it's worth" column. After shooting my flintlock late Lancaster for a couple of years, and cleaning with TC13 solvent, water and dry patches, I started having problems with cleaning it after shooting. As long as the patch I ran down the barrel was wet, everthing was...

    Smoothbore Ballistics

Has anyone chronographed the .600RB from a .62 smoothie to figure velocity/FPE at the muzzle, 50, 75 and 100 yds? I'd be interested in the figures.

    Swiss Powder question

Are the size designations of Swiss powder the same as for Goex? i.e, if you are shooting Goex FFFg in a .50 and FFg in a .62, would you shoot the same in Swiss with a 10-15% volumn reduction?
