    Hawken Rifles

Well, I don't think I can compete with the one Keb built, but here's a shot of one I built from a ToTW kit a few years back... It's their "Early Hawken" in .54. I do a LOT of hunting, and carry it all over the place, so I did stray and add a sling to it (which I generally leave off). Phil

    Pre-made cannon barrels?

I had a cannon (sold it) that fired 1" lead balls, and I also shot C batteries out of it. I bought the barrel, and built the carriage myself. One of my friends has a barrel that he fires beer cans filled with concrete from. He once filled a can with some of that "dipping" rubber for dipping...

    Pistol fired in the dark

Ever try a candle shoot? Those are loads of fun! Basically, you wait until it's good and dark, then put a lit candle in a tipped-over box. You then shoot at it to put the flame out, but you aren't allowed to hit the wax... When we do it for competition, we only allow loading from the...

    grouping shots

Thanks for the lube recipes! I'm looking forward to giving them a try. The reason I tried the pre-lubed (with Bore Butter) patches was due to the fact that I was worried about the spit drying out. And actually, mostly because I wanted to have some speed loaders ready to go. Whether it...

    Length of ML Season

Here in Wisconsin we have a 10 day ML season which opens the day after the regular firearms season closes. So it's generally running the first week of December. It's pretty rough to find and get close to deer after a 9 day open firearms season, but it's better than nothing... We're also...

    grouping shots

You didn't mention what you are using for a patch lube. Sometimes changing what you use for a lube will either improve or worsen the accuracy of your rifle. However, if you try a different patch material, do not change your lube until you know how the new patch material effects your accuracy...

    grouping shots

Lots of good advice here! One other thing I've seen people have problems with, is to make sure you have a good rest. I normally do all my sighting in from a bench rest, and once I know the gun is shooting accurately I switch to other positions. One particular problem I've seen over and over...

    Flintlock and wind

You can find flashguards at DGW or ToTW. I don't think they work on all locks though, but I could be wrong. I think you need to have a lock where the frizzen screw goes in from the outside of the lock, rather than from the inside (and maybe you do have the right type?) Phil

    What I'm shooting...

Wow chopper, you live close! I live just south of Fremont!

    What I'm shooting...

I have the sling attached back there with a big slotted-head round-topped screw that I browned. Nothing fancy. Probably not "correct", but I needed a sling for hunting, and didn't have an actual button stud. I just haven't gotten around to correcting that part yet. Phil

    What I'm shooting...

Sheesh, I can't resist... Gotta post my "babies" too, hehe! I started out with a percussion CVA Kentucky when I was in high school, and switched to a LH .50 flintlock Dixie Tennessee Mountain Rifle in college. I eventually bought and built this kit for the Pedersoli Brown Bess Trade gun...

    Just sayin' "Hi!"

Thanks for the welcome guys! Emery, I live about 45 minutes west of Appleton, just south of Waupaca. Are you down near Milwaukee?

    Just sayin' "Hi!"

Hi all, I'm new to the forum and just sayin' Hi! I'm not new to muzzleloaders, but fairly new to building them. I've been shooting them for about 20 years, built a few kits, and built a few from Track of the Wolf. I got the ML bug bad back in high school, and it hasn't faded yet... Phil
