200+/- year old flintlock coach gun (picture heavy)

IMO this gun looks like it was cobbled together by a frontier gunsmith from recycled parts. I’d guess it was cut down long ago to serve as a boys shotgun. By the outward appearance of the barrel, I would not recommend shooting a projectile of any kind. The risk of destroying an antique and...

    Minnie ball accuracy?

Sorry my friend, but all Enfield pattern rifle muskets had progressive depth rifling. The Enfield pattern paper cartridge was torn open with the teeth, powder poured in the muzzle and then reversed. The Pritchett bullet was then seated in the muzzle and the top portion of the cartridge which...

Damascus (Twist) Barrels- Who shoots them?

I think we know the same gunsmith, no his work isn’t cheap but he is very reasonable.

Damascus (Twist) Barrels- Who shoots them?

I believe they burst this way simply because of construction. Barrels made for blackpowder get considerably thinner, faster towards the muzzle than their smokeless counterparts. Hence when a twist barrel bursts it’s up about midway and not at the much thicker breech. But that’s just my...

With 40" tubes, I'd bet it is a waterfowl gun spence.

    horn fore end

The gun I'm pecking away at will be an english fowler converted to percussion. Inspired by one in the Iowa state historical museum. The original has what appears to be lighter colored horn for the cap.

    horn fore end

Has anyone ever made and installed a horn fore end before? I was wondering the process and such.

    Whitworth Volunteer Loadings

Blackfingers- A #11 nipple will do fine, but as stated earlier a platinum lined one will last about 300-500 shots. While a steel or stainless steel nipple will only last about 30 or so.
