Need help in identifying a muzzleloader pls help!

Agree that the lockplate (at least) started out as flint. Additionally, that the rifle started out with a single trigger, but that a set trigger was retrofitted at some point. Look at the trigger guard and you'll see that the rear of the bow has been removed to make room for the rear trigger.

Impact of cold temperature on ballistics

toupiny: When you say bait I envision an elevated stand; was your son shooting DOWN at the bucks? If so it should have been necessary to hold somewhat low. He may be correct in thinking that the bullets went right over their backs. Still, 15-20 yards is so close that little correction was...

    Your most "INCREDABLE" shot?

I once made a shot that, while not incredible, was good enough, and quite welcome in the circumstances. I arrived at the local range, and dragged my stuff from the car to a picnic table in back of the row of benches; then proceeded to uncase Lany. (Her real name is Magdalena, but she has me...

    Euroarms Kentuckian Riffle

Yes, the Kentuckian had a two piece ramrod. (My dad had one.) There was a short section that screwed into the longer one. He replaced the original with a 48" hickory rod, installed a jag using epoxy glue, and cut the rod to length. As I recall, it stuck out past the end of the barrel a couple...

Track of the Wolf Bucks County rifle kit - Update #7

The difficulty of drilling the front lock bolt in the right place is one every builder faces. If it's too high you're forced to choose between "chain saw filing" a groove in the underside of the barrel (right where the internal pressure is highest) or omitting the forward bolt. If it's too low...

    Triggger problem

To verify that the trigger is not binding you could remove the lock and pull the trigger. If it moves freely, and you can see it move up into the sear bar mortise, then that is not the problem. If something is stopping it, then you can make a 1/8" wood chisel by grinding one end of an allen...

Source for Rice .54 swamped C profile

Thanks to all for their replies. I called both Rice and Buckeye this morning, but there was no answer. I'll keep trying, and remember that Friendship has everyone distracted. billd: Contacting Knob Mountain is a good idea. I've noticed that they have some components that no one else does...

roundball: No, I hadn't gone direct, so last night I emailed Rice Barrels. bogie: If they're away from the shop I'll have to remember to be patient! Bill: I'll contact Buckeye as well then. If you want to PM regarding the Lehigh pre carve package I'll be more than glad to consider it. At...

Source for Rice .54 swamped C profile

Hi folks. Does anyone know where I can buy a Rice .54 swamped C profile barrel with radius groove rifling? TOTW is fresh out. I'd prefer a 44" length, but would probably go with a 42" just as happily. Similarly, I'm in the market for a stock blank akin to TOTW's sugar maple in a middle...

    Purchased an original Hall Flintlock

Oh my gosh!!! Whatever your wife does to you, it's worth it. I've seen Springfield 03s that weren't in anywhere as good condition. The thing I like best is that bubba hasn't buggered the screw slots with a round bladed screwdriver. Immaculate condition for a 190 year old rifle. One of the...

    ultimate flintlock for ?

I'd definitely choose a flintlock with real black powder, the potassium nitrate of which contains its own oxygen. That way I'd be reasonably certain of getting off one shot before I was asphyxiated by the planet's noxious atmosphere.

    shipping bp

Has anyone ever explored the possibility of shipping black powder paper CARTRIDGES, with or without ball? Possibly those are viewed the same way as .30-06 cartridges, and can be shipped. Maybe the Hazmat fees and regulations apply to bulk bp in a can or bag, but not to cartridges?

    More about flints

Excellent photos! My belief is that this class of lock was designed for the fastest possible ignition. It has a very heavy mainspring, a tumbler stirrup and a frizzen roller. All this makes for quick lock time, but the trade off is decreased flint life. Flints will never last as long as they...

Can you shoot in the snow?

I went hunting with a flintlock fowler today, and the temperature was 15 degrees... Ebiggs is correct in implying that cold and wet are two different issues. A by-product of black powder ignition is a small amount of water. This is great when the temperature is in the thirties, but when it's...

    French Amber Flints

Last time I looked, the 3/4" Amber flints at TOTW cost a dime less than the English flints. More interestingly, the half dozen I bought all appear to have two edges. This suggests that you could wear out one edge in a lock that likes 3/4" flints, and then install it with the other edge forward...
