Vent Liner Question - Thread Compound

For a flintlock vent liner you have no intent of removing once installed (I do not remove them for cleaning), do you use Loctite on the threads? I have worked the liner down to size so it does not stick into the barrel, and am ready for final fitting flush with the outside barrel face. Should I...

    Thoughts on Smoothbore Rear "Notches"?

I was talking with someone recently at one of our muzzle loader matches. We have a few smoothbore shooters, but not many. We talked a little bit about filing into the tang/breech top surface a "v-notch" that acts as a sort of landmark for sighting the gun. Some people consider it a witness mark...

    Opinions on Miroku (?) Bess

I'm looking at buying an older repro Brown Bess. This appears to be a Miroku product - it has a serial number and a small "circle" stamped on the side of the barrel. Lock is marked "Tower" and has the GR Crown stamp on it. Has what seems to be a flattened profile trigger guard. Any opinions on...

    Bouncing Frizzin; No Sparks

Having trouble with a Siler lock on a pistol project - not getting much in the way of sparks and breaking flints. Also having the frizzin bounce back rather than staying open. The frizzin surface turns away a file so it seems pretty hard. Flints do not make deep gouges in the frizzin (actually...

    Cap Post - Brazed?

Does anyone know of a guide to brazing or soldering into place a cap post for a pocket-sized colt (in this case the Uberti Pocket Police). I installed one using JB Weld and it worked for about 10 shots, then fouling caused the post to get caught up in the hammer slot and break off at the glue...

Video: Chain Fire from the Front

Sometimes you hear people say, "chain fires start from the back". With fallen or badly fitting caps, perhaps this is true. But with a badly undersized ball, you can indeed get the classic "chain fire from the front" in a revolver. I've watched this video a few times - the slow motion is great...

    Destroying a Muzzle Loader

Not sure if this has been posted before, but here is a video depicting abuse/destructive testing of a muzzle loader. The most interesting test is the "barrel full of powder" one. Obviously, the smokeless powder test is a disaster waiting to happen. https://youtu.be/en384qVqrug

    What's This?

A friend asked me about this cannon today. It almost looks like a home-made thing to me-- pretty strange looking.

    Lee Molds?

I have a set of Lee Molds for roundball. I noticed that even when the mold is hot, it still leaves little lines/swirls in the ball. It looks like they match little lines/swirls in the cavity surface. Do these small swirls make a difference in a rifle ball's accuracy, or do they wash out in the...

    Ridiculous Screws

I've posted a few times about my Uberti 1851 Navy, which is a good shooting gun but which was put together by either someone with a pneumatic wrench or incredible strength. Originally I had to drill out the 6 factory nipples because they would not budge, even after the full battery of...

    Need a little local help

Looking to put a White Lightning vent hole liner in a rifle I've had awhile. Does anyone know of a gunsmith local to northern Virginia that has experience with muzzleloaders and could do this sort of thing? I know of a few modern gun experienced smiths but am looking for someone familiar with...

    Curious about Goex can

Just a bit of passing curiosity- when did Goex go to the plastic can for its powder? The last batch I bought (recently) had a motor-oil style plastic bottle with break-free type cap and ring. Not complaining- frankly doesn't bother me much, but just curious is all.

    Lead

Earlier this spring I bought some small lead bars from a vendor at an NSSA meet. Foolishly I forgot to ask whether the led bars were suitable for a rifled barrel. The vendor did tell me the lead was "very soft". Is there some way of telling, at least using the usual "at home" tools just how...

Uberti .36 51 Navy Safety Pins?

A question for the more experienced revolver shooters out there: I have a steel frame .36 Navy made by Uberti. My standard load is 18-20 grains of FFF then a felt wad then the .380 ball. I have noticed that over time the safety pins/nubs between the nipples have worn flat somewhat and that...

    Cusion Wad and Ball?

What effect would a cushion wad have on shooting ball? I'm referring to the following setup: 12 gauge with an overpowder card then the cushion wad then patch and ball. Would adding the cushion change anything with ball, or is it only useful with shot?
