    M M BENSON RIFLE

Nice rifle. Here is a link to an ongoing auction for another rifle made by M. M. Benson who was a gunmaker from West Virginia. https://www.liveauctioneers.com/item/172180830_antique-mm-benson-half-stock-percussion-kentucky-rifle-approximately-36-caliber

    A Horner's Craft On A Longrifle

Recently took in this rifle on a trade. I was impressed with the fine artistic details that were cut into the plain maple stock on this 45 cal. flintlock. The gun was made by Mike Lange, and I was told the art work was done by Wild Willy Frankfort.

The locks for the Northwest or "Trade" guns

I have a Bob Roller lock that would make a fine choice to use for a copy of one of these late English trade guns. Just needs a little bit of cosmetic tweeking.

The locks for the Northwest or "Trade" guns

The rifle that this lock is from sports a 30" 24 gage (58 cal.) barrel and is original length.

The locks for the Northwest or "Trade" guns

A very late 1870 lock used by HBC. I know that not too many here would be interested in such a late era gun but........

    Good barrel or tomato stake?

If you are stuck with the barrel for whatever reason, you could cut it off and have it rebreeched. I have done this myself a couple times using antique barrels. Did them without a lathe but had a large drill break on the last one which put the fear of God in me. Next time will take it to a...

Three 1769 Pattern Dublin Castle Brown Besses

Thank you Wesley for sharing this history! Beholding the actual arms that have a very good chance of "being there" during our countries founding sure does make this history buff's day!!

Three 1769 Pattern Dublin Castle Brown Besses

Great looking Bess's! What barrel lengths on those '69's? Have you any details about those regiment histories?

    Newly discovered Early Flintlock Rifle?

Adding more speculation to captured Germanic short rifles from the Rev War, I'm surprised nobody mentioned the battle of Trenton that took place after Washington's crossing of the Delaware. Seems to me that a lot of those rifles would have found their way into our sides hands from the number of...

Unintentional perk of being from a poor rural area.

The last used scoped muzzle loader I bought had the mount holes drilled right through into the bore. I no longer even look at them anymore regardless of what nice gun may lie underneath.

    Belted Ball

This western PA rifle built around 1840 by A.B. Smith incorporated the twin groove barrel for firing belted balls. It is very unique also, being just a 32 caliber small bore. I share these pictures taken when I was the proud owner of this rifle. I include a lot more information in my post made...

    So....I'm stupid!

We're all pretty much just life-long students in the "School of Hard Knocks", where no diplomas are ever given. No degrees ever acquired.

    Buying advice

My best advise is to make sure the bore is in very good condition. A bore light is recommended. Also that the lock & triggers function well. The rest is mainly cosmetic on the outside of the rifle and you as a buyer will decide if all is well in that department. I only ship my guns through the...

    brass furniture

When brass gets old and is left alone, it takes on a very rich "mustard" color that really appeals to me.

Dream Tools--What do you yearn for?

I would just like to have the knowledge required to operate all those fancy machine shop machines! My kid brother who retired out of the Navy as a machinist and now has another 18 years working as a master machinist for the Navy as a civilian contractor will be my instructor in another 2 years...
