    Map horn

Fort Detroit was besieged by Huron, Chippewa, Potawatomi, Ottawa, and a few other tribes from May 9 until Oct. 31 1763 during what is comonly called " Pontiacs war". Chief Pontiac wanted to drive the British out of the territory and formed alliances with the tribes to do that. I would suppose...

    Southern banded horn

I like to make a different style of horn every now and then. The Southern banded horn was made generally in the southeastern states. I don't have a lathe to turn the spout end or the base plug but that's ok since some banded horns were made without the turnings.

    Fishmouth horn

I decided to make a horn that isn't in the usual style. This type of horn was made by the Tansel family back in the early 1800's. I would think that you would get some looks at your next shoot if you had this hanging on your side.

    Latest horn

Winters are long in Michigan. I make these to keep from getting cabin fever. Sometimes I "age" them......just depends on the horn and if I think it will improve the looks. Enjoy.

    bullet alloy-bullet diameter relationship

Greetings...Having read here several times that harder alloys cast bullets "2 or 3 thousandths" larger than pure lead, I decided to find out for myself. In my test, I used x-ray lead sheet, tested with a Saeco lead hardness tester to be pure, and pure tin, purchased from a metal supplier. I used...

    salt and rum horns

I had some pieces of horn left over from a project and decided to put them to use. The rum horn has a Latin inscription "BIBO ERGO SUM". There was a Latin phrase "COGITO ERGO SUM" which means "I think, therefore I am". Some wag perverted it into "BIBO ERGO SUM" which means "I drink, therefore I...

    No More Cheek Pain!

Ha! I was going to shoot my Centermark fusil de chasse on Saturday so I had it set up in the gun cradle on the workbench on Friday night to clean the grease out of the bore. I KNEW how my cheekbone would feel on Saturday night. Just then, my eyes spotted a wood rasp lying on a shelf. I figured I...

First long rifle build in 26 years

Greetings.... This is my first long rifle build in 26 years. I'm going to give one to each of my grandkids so they remember their grandpop and their American heritage. The build took about 100 hours. Next on my list is to learn engraving to put the finishing touch on it. It has a grade 4 curly...

    500 yard target

Greetings....This is a reproduction of a target I shot at a mid-range match held at Cadillac Mi. last weekend. The targets we shoot at are pasted to a backer so You obviously can't take it home as a souvenir, therefore I always plot each shot on my scoresheet as I take them. Conditions were...

200 yd. group with the Gibbs

Greetings.....Here is a 200 yard bench group I shot with the Gibbs on Monday. Light fishtailing wind from 6:00...nearly ideal conditions. I just wanted to make sure everything was A-OK for the 1000 yard match coming up this weekend at Grayling Mi. Also...this group was shot using powder from 2...

    Rigby 10 bore

I bought this kit from a person who bought it 20 years ago but never assembled it. It is a 10 bore and I decided to put a rear sight on it to make it the perfect all purpose gun. It seems like the more powder I feed it, the tighter the groups get. I'll regulate the sights until I settle on the...

    soldering under rib...need help!

OK guys, here's the deal. I'm putting together an English 10 ga. perc. fowler. I'm at the stage where I've soldered the "drip bar" and ram rod guides. I "tinned" the under rib in anticipation of soldering it to the barrel this weekend. I am starting to notice rust creeping out from under the...

    soldering under barrel rib

I purchased a 10 gauge smoothbore kit [English style]which I intend to put rifle sights on to make a 10 bore smooth rifle. It ought to be a real thumper. The question is: when soldering on the under barrel rib, do you heat up the whole length of the rib/barrel at once and try to solder it all at...

    24:1 paper patch bullet test

Greetings...here is a 200 yard,15 shot group I shot this week with my Pedersoli Gibbs. 540 grain paper patch bullet cast at 24:1, no over powder wad, 90 grains of 1 1/2 Swiss, RWS caps. Accuracy with 24:1 P.P. and G.G. bullets is excellent using NO over powder wad. Doesn't this fly in the face...

test results: 2 long range bullets

Greetings...Here are two 15 shot groups that I shot a couple of evenings ago from my Pedersoli Gibbs .450 M/L. The goal was to test a new paper patch bullet against my tried and true grease groove bullet. The wind was calm to 5 MPH from my 12:00. No wad of any type was used between either bullet...

    "round" ball..........NOT!

Greetings.....I had the pleasure yesterday of dryballing my .45 long rifle. First time in years. Oh well, I moped all the way home, and made my way down to the mancave to dig out the CO2 ball discharger. I pointed the muzzle into the clothes basket and watched the patched ball exit the muzzle...
