    Guineafowl in SA

A Francolin is a wild bird, not unlike a pheasant in behavior and habitat but much smaller. There are many varieties of these birds all over the world. You can look at some pictures here: http://images.google.com/images?hl=en&q=francolin&gbv=2 Steve

    felt wad

Well, .54 should be a good size, or better make it a little larger, like .55 or .56. Felt wads sometimes improve accuracy quite a bit. Steve

Good idea, I'll try that. Thanks, Steve

    Roundballs in 1/28 twist?

I did try .490 roundballs with .015 patch out of my unspeakable gun with 1 in 28" twist. Result was about 12" spraying at 50 yards for any charge from 50 to 90 grains while some saboted bullets group better than 1.5". Since that is my only .50 rifle, I gave the rest of the balls away. Steve

    Rendezvous Women

Believe it or not, I do want to read about it, but your link shows a page with no actual content. Navigation, yes, but no content. Steve

    Best Hunting Projectile?

In past years, hunting with one of them -eh- other muzzleloaders, I have used conicals (385 gr. .50 great plains bullet), had one of them punch through the deer and not expand at all. Later, using an 240 gr. XTP hollowpoint in a .50 sabot, I shot a buck at 30 yards using 85 grains of powder...

    I've been spiked

Thermite consists of powdered aluminum mixed with iron oxide in some form; aluminum oxide is what will be left after ignition, along with melted iron. Thermite would not work for creating an obstruction. After all these attempts, I am still a bit stumped why a super-modern tungsten-carbide or...

Very interesting read on Wikipedia indeed. Thanks. Steve

    Cleaning

I have used Ballistol for many years on the old Walther LG53 pellet rifle I got when I was 11. Not being used much during those years, it did get a little rusty, but nothing really serious. Now that I live in a more humid climate, it rusted pretty quickly before I switched to RemOil. No more...

GREAT news to start the New Year off!!!

Hey Billy, come on, you just want to show off your guns! (Thanks for the pictures, by the way.) There has been a really enlightening thread on the MZ hunting forum here recently about hog hunting. I'd say take the heaviest caliber rifle you feel comfortable and accurate with, using a heavy...

Grease to force out bore obstruction - LONG

Clutch is right, and everybody SHOULD have one. My buddy had a load down his barrel and tried to blow it out with his CO2 thingy - wouldn't budge. I had just put a new cartridge in mine and it did the trick just fine. Shows that pressure does matter. Steve

    Fighting the entropy!

It depends on what you use to lube the guns with after cleaning. Some oils are not very good at preventing rust. There have been some threads on this forum about lubrication and tests. I personally use RemOil and have no regrets. Some of my guns are used only for one or two weeks a year and the...

    Got my GPR today!

If your GPR is like mine when I had it new, you need to go and clean the inside of the barrel again, especially the inside of the breech, which has a smaller diameter than the barrel. A .30 brush or a thin slotted tip with a cleaning patch can reach down there. If you find any of that packing...

    Instant gratification

Just be sure not to do this with anything low-powered like an airgun or .22 CB, because then golf balls shoot back! Steve

    Question

You can hunt squirrels with a .50 too, if you have a tame load. Going to .50 will give you a lot more options in rifles - the Lyman Great Plains Rifle (GPR) in .50 would be a very good starting point for a caplock. Since .50 is the most commonly used muzzleloading caliber, it is also easiest to...

    CWD

Yes, and it appears that it is very difficult to remove the infectious agent from the LAND, even for years. Much worse than foot-and-mouth, and here to stay with us for a long time, as I see it. Steve

Flintlock Doe and a little more

Jethro, I noticed that too when reading KY's post, but I think he means to say that he did not need any follow-up shots, unlike the bam-reload-bam-reload-bam-reload-bam-is-it-dead-yet? kinda crowd. What you hear just sitting down somewhere and being quiet on opening day of firearms season...
