Heaviest Bullets For .50 Caliber 48" Twist

Holy mole! Had no idea it would stabilize and shoot accurately in a 48" twist. That's awesome. I shot those sized down in a fast twist .50 and also paper patched in a fast twist .52 bore (reworked TC Renegade).

    .45 Caliber: Deer?

If you wonder about how a .440 or .445 round ball will perform on a deer, go shoot a rabbit. No, I'm not kidding. If you were taking a head shot on a bunny rabbit and accidentally dropped your sight picture a smidgen... you've got a mess to deal with and very little meat to take home. Yeah, been...

    Pritchett Bullet Mold

I'd examine some possibilities. a) Reduce Lyman #575213 minies with a push through sizer. I've taken .54 caliber minies down to .519". b) Have a 2nd or 3rd hand .54 caliber minie mold skim cut inside to produce to smooth sided diameter of your choice. This is easy too. c) Have a 2nd or 3rd hand...

RCBS 45-500 Used With Lyman #454613 Base Plug

Hey longcruise. The mold has a sliding bracket that you install for the RCBS factory plug, held in place by the two screws that hold the blocks on to the mold handles. To use the Lyman plug I just didn't install the sliding bracket when mounting the blocks on to the handles and that let the...

RCBS 45-500 Used With Lyman #454613 Base Plug

The longer bullet at the top of the photo is from the RCBS 45-500 mold using with the original base plug at 1.4" length. Using the Lyman #454613 base plug gives 1.04" length at 375 grains.

    some whitworth shooting

By the way, recently picked up a RCBS 45-500 hollow base paper patch mold that throws a 1.4" long bullet. It's slick smooth for sure. But it's probably too long for the twist in the .458 bore. So scrounging around in the fun room I came up with one of the "new style" Lyman #454613 molds. If I...

    some whitworth shooting

I try to stay with .001 under bore when sizing but prefer to arrange things so I can get by without sizing. But that said, some paper will spring back a bit before I get to the range and make them no longer .001 under bore.

    some whitworth shooting

Researching bullets used in the Whitworth rifles, came across a relic bullet description stating it was about 1.4" long. Nice looking bullet.

    some whitworth shooting

No, David, it's a great idea. The inside of a paper patch mold having less than a fine smooth finish gives the paper ever so slightly a better grip of the exterior of the casting. It does not interfere with the paper falling away. Not like patching a lube grooved bullet but rather just not smooth.

    some whitworth shooting

Jshorter, about finding a paper patched mold... As long as you're staying with round bullets, having an inexpensively obtained second or third hand (smaller diameter) mold machined to a larger smooth sided cavity of your chosen nose design and diameter is as good a way to go as any. Producing a...

What Muzzleloading Stuff Did You Do Today?

I'm pulling out all the nominally .445 and .450 to .455 molds to see what there is to try out, paper patch or maybe modify for a .45 bore rifle. And something I never realized before but just stumbled over, the Lyman .69 minie mold was designed to use the same diameter base plug as their .58...

Fast Twists Smaller Than Forty Bore?

Anyone have tales to tell about shooting smaller than forty bore fast twist rifles? Reckon the TC Cherokees mite qualify though in .32 caliber the 30" twist really wasn't all that fast.
