Random thoughts on the Lyman/ Investarm patent breach

So i’ve been following the touch hole/self priming thread and it got me wondering about the actual dimensions of the Lyman GPR patent breech. I do use a brush to scrub it out, but have often wondered about making a scraper to fit. Other thoughts include opening the patent breech diameter, or...

    Rework a cheap foreign horn

So when I first got into rock locks I bought a cheapo imported horn on sale at Gander mountain. I was wondering if anyone has manages to make an ugly silk purse from one of these sows ears? Can’t help thinking about pulling/replacing the base plug, sanding the spout down and making a wooden...

Anyone else have sore raw fingertips

Just whining here. I did some repairs, reinforcements, and modifications to the bag I made a few years ago… all I’m gonna say is that the upholstery needles and the needle on my speedy-stitch awl are dang sharp. They will easily cut you and if you dont pay attention you will have pink stitching...

Frizzen wear - smooth it or replace it

so, I pulled Patience (my Lyman GPR) out to put a fresh Rich Pierce flint in for the upcoming PA rock-lock season and noticed dents/nicks in the frizzen where the flint makes initial contact. I am gonna mess with the leather pad and wrap to change the impact angle a few degrees cuz it looked...

I thought i found a local source for Goex

Stopped in a small local gun shop over lunch today. Been 18 years and at least 2 owners since my shadow graced the door. Conversation was cordial...... "Been a while since i was here. Back before the original owner passed. " says I Current owner, "well thats been going on 20 years..... Happy...

    Two-fer ??

Since it came up in the Power and the .54 Hawken thread...I've been pondering this one since I had to pass up on a shot in Archery season because the deer never separated enough to present a clean shot. My bow would most likely have been up to the task but, IMHO, that's way too risky of a shot...

Choke bore - or something to be concerned about?

Some background: I was cleaning out the GPR last night and decided to wrap a patch around an old brush for a bit tighter fit. Wasn't sure if I was seeing rust or crud that was "still" coming out from when I used some bore butter last year (I thought that I got it clean, but you guys have...

    Powder horns and their plugs

I have a cheapo imported one that I've not used yet. I'm thinking about reworking it a little bit and was wondering if anyone could post a couple pictures of the mouth\pour hole and the plug? I'm wondering about the size of the hole, the shape of the plug (straight or tapered?), and how tight...

    Undersized PRB? say a .490 in a .54

Been wondering about this for a while and since I've started to more seriously look for a rock lock for my daughter...and I since I am needing something shorter and LH for her I seem to be seeing more .50 cal available.... if at all possible I'll go with a .54 for her too. I have a .54 GPR and...

Show me the INSIDE of your bags

Guys, Do you have any special arrangements or pockets inside your bags, or do you just dump it all in and go fishing for it when you need it?

    Daughter's first deer hunt

Well today was the opening of CF season in PA. I took my 12 year old daughter out for her first deer hunt. She took her shotgun (at some point I'll be getting her a Deer Stalker) and I took "Patience" My GPR rock lock. We set up in a blow down and after about an hour she hears "something" down...

    Hard Red Fouling

Went out and shot "Patience" a bit today. I was swabbing between every shot and I noticed that I was consistently getting a hard red fouling. You could see it in the corner on the grooves after the shot. Push a patch and it all came out on it... almost looked like coffee grounds. Anyway, it...

    "hairy" Deer Skin Bag opinions

Just curious about your opinions on a bag made from Deer Skin - HAIR STILL ON? Everything that I've seen so far is smooth, tanned leather.

    Since we're talking patches

Here is the latest results from taking "Patience" ~ my GPR ~ out to the range. - All shots were rested. - 90 Gr 3f Grafs. -.015" precut ticking that I lubed last year with bore butter and left in the tin. - re-wet the patches til they were soft and slipery with a 1:1:1 solution of 90% alcohol...

    Beginners Lefthand flinter

Looking for suggestions for a LEFT HANDED beginning rock lock for my 12 year old daughter. Want it to be .54 for ball commonality and to reduce the weight a bit. Thinking about a Lyman Deer Stalker with it's 24" barrel and a wood stock that I can cut the LOP down on.... What effect will the 1x48...

What sights do you use? Primative, Colored, Painted, Fiber Optic?

Breaking this out from the Hunting Yardage thread: My question is especially to those with "aging eyesight" but is open to all ... and I am definitely playing a bit of devils' advocate here.... Do you suffer and struggle to stay "pure" with the primitive sights that are "correct" for your...

Took Patience out for her first range session

Well, I took patience out today... She's the GPR kit that I started 8 moths ago.... I'll get some pics of her up shortly, but this one will have to do for now. The first 5 shots from the bench at 25 yards. 60gr 3f Graff's, .015" precut pillow ticking, TC Bore Butter, .530" swaged ball. Thought I...

    Slugged my GPR Barrel today

I slugged the barrel on my GPR project today. First interesting thing is that it is a 5 groove barrel - expected a 6 groove. I measured from land to groove and got .548 with a groove diameter (as the groove is about 2.5x the width of the lands and I can get tis measurement also) of .555...

How much metal polishing before browning

What level of sanding or polishing do you take the barrel and other metal parts to before browning, rusting, "peeing" on it, or whatever process you use on them? Draw file, 60grit, 120 grit, 240 grit, 400 wet, 600 wet, mirror polished?

    GPR Kit in the white

Have about a half dozen coats of danish oil on the stock. It has some figure that might be better served if I had stained it a bit. I added the metal in the white to see what she looks like.... gonna give the metal a vinegar finish.
