New (to me) CVA Mountain Rifle!

I thought that was what I was trying to say  My post is two sentences. The 45 and 50cals had patchboxes and the "Big Bores" did not.

New (to me) CVA Mountain Rifle!

They were offered by CVA in 45,50,54,and 58cal. The 54 and 58's were called "Big Bores" and for some strange reason never had patch boxes.

I plan on being there on Saturday. I've been there three times now and it's always been a great show. I have a few things on my shopping list to look for and I just got my tax refund,,OhOh :surrender:

    Tarnish Stainless Steel?

I'm not going thru all the hoops needed for pics here but I'll post the results if anything works. So far I've tried the mustard and it didn't do anything at all. Think I'll try naval jelly next.

    Tarnish Stainless Steel?

Thanks for all the tips guys . I've already got all the stuff mentioned so I'll start trying them and see what kind of results I get. I have a few historically styled knives that are driving me crazy because they just don't look right with shiny stainless steel blades.

    Tarnish Stainless Steel?

I think I already know the answer to this question, but is there a way to put some tarnish or patina on a stainless steel knife blade so it doesn't look so much like...well stainless steel? Maybe some kind of acid treatment, or gun blue? Figured I'd throw this question out here because a lot of...

    Got a 2nd Tower Pistol

I havn't seen one of those pistols in years. I always wanted one back in the 70's when CVA had them in their catalogs. I like the older one in your second pic better. Cool find.

Last Squirrel Hunt of the Season

Great story and pics. Them hunting buds of yours sure look happy :hatsoff:. Our season here in Michigan ends Saturday as well. I can't see having an opportunity to get out again though. We can still hunt rabbits till the end of March.

    Squirrel/small game gun

The only small game I've ever hunted with a blackpowder rifle is squirrel and rabbits, and the only caliber I've ever owned or used has been 32. Never had a reason to want anything bigger but if I ever get another it'll be a 36 or 40 :idunno: Since I started wearing bifocals though I mostly...

    Days Past

Me too  Living somewhere that don't get snow just wouldn't seem right to me. I can live without the subzero stuff we're getting now though.

    Pillow ticking possibles bag

I agree. I also have several leather shot bags. But more often than not lately I've been using one of my simple square shaped canvas bags when I head for the woods. Mine are about 10" square and sewed up from one piece pretty much like Crockett describes. The straps are 3 layers of the same...

    Wedge Pin Loose

Bending the wedge also works, but then ya have to remember which wedge goes were. Unless you have a one wedge gun. Then I guess it wouldn't matter.

    CVA Mountain Rifle Age?

Yours has an earlier serial number than mine and I bought mine new in probably around 1980 or 81. Mine is also .50cal percussion and is not marked with place of manufacture. The only barrel markings other than the serial number are "Connecticut Valley Arms,Inc. Black Powder Only .50cal" I have...

    Jackson Ohio Trade Fair?

Here's the info I found on it http://rendezvousohio.com/Ohio_events_winter.html I am wondering if this is a good sized event with many vendors or not?

    wool blanket wadding?

As long as you are sure the material is actually 100% wool I don't see any reason it wouldn't work. If there's any poly in there I wouldn't use it. I'd be concerned because I read somewhere that manufacturers can list wool as 100% even if it has a small amount of other stuff in it. Something to...

    Horn Plug, tether or no?

I prefer a brass valve on mine. I do have two that use wooden plugs though, and both of them are tethered to the horn. Never tried them any other way cause it seems like a surefire way to lose one to me. In my case what I can see happening is I'd fumble around and drop one. Then not be able to...

    Jackson Ohio Trade Fair?

I figured somebody would have chimed in on this by now :idunno: I'm going down there anyway though cause I've got the time and have the urge for a change of scenery before gas prices go back up.

thinking about making a powder horn

Looks to me like Track is showing "out of stock" on all their unfinished horns right now. If they had any I think you could count on getting something usable though. I`ve always been happy with anything I've got from them.

thinking about making a powder horn

I can't say for buying a horn off ebay because I've never done it. Making your own horn from a rough one isn't hard though, just takes more time because you have to do a lot of filing and sanding to get from rough to that polished look. I made all 4 of my horns myself and only 1 started as a...
