    18th century Dagger

Looking at Minnis's book and The Knife in Homespun America, I was struck by how many double edge daggers/knives were featured in the books. You made a beautiful example. Nice work!

    Decorated Clay Pipe

While looking through back posts of a well known page that features contemporary artists doing traditional work based on historical examples, I came across the work of Ra Sharek Gadd having decorated a couple of clay pipes. Doing a little background research, it would appear that early pipes...

    Trade/Camp Mirror

Been a lot of years since I saw the original (1985), but what I remember it appeared to be a mirror, not polished surface.

    Trade/Camp Mirror

I cut the mirror from a 12"X12" mirror - then I gave it my own aging treatment for the appearance of age!

    Trade/Camp Mirror

Yesterday, I threw together a trade mirror. I based it off an original (dated somewhere between 1820-1840) I saw in the Museum of the Fur Trade in Chadron, Nebraska back in 1985. The frame is made of brass, with a 3" X 4 1/2" mirror. I put a 1/2 sunburst around the attachment hole and lightly...

    Pack Axe

The keys to forge welding is have clean surfaces to weld together, good flux, proper heat, and many light, quick blows to set the weld. You don't need to beat the devil out of the weld to get it to hold, rather many light strikes set the weld.

    Pack Axe

This axe has a fairly thin body with a thin cutting edge. I don't have an exact angle, I just work until it looks right. I hammer the file edge until it is thin enough to fit into the gap in the axe edge that I left for the bit and drive in the file steel while the axe body is orange hot. Then...

    Pack Axe

I finished another project yesterday. I wanted to build an axe suitable for packing on a trek or walk in camp. I wanted to cut some of the length and weight of a traditional full size axe, but have something more substantial than a belt axe or hatchet. The head of the axe weighs right at 2.5# is...

    Covered Firkin

I cheated and sealed it. I have wooden buckets that have to be soaked and they are a pain. This one holds with no preparation. :v

    Covered Firkin

I probably mislabeled the product - I based it off an antique piece I have in my collection. I found this on-line: "Objects commonly referred to today as firkins are actually lidded pails or buckets. Historically, a firkin is a specific unit of measure. Four Firkins (Lot 1172, Estimate...

    Covered Firkin

I finished this project this morning. It is a covered bucket sometimes called a firkin. The firkin body and lid are made from 120+ year old yellow pine lumber that came from an old barn on the farm I grew up on. The bands are green elm, rived from a live limb and made with locking connections on...

    Double Edge Rifleman's Knife

I want to share a project I recently finished. I made a double edge rifleman's knife from an old Nicholson file. The blade is 10 inches long and the knife is 15 inches overall. The handle is hickory with an iron ferrule and butt cap. The ferrule and butt cap are lightly engraved. The whole knife...

    Horn heating and shaping?

I use lard to heat a horn. I bought a small deep fryer at Goodwill for a couple of dollars and bought 3 pounds of unsalted lard at a local bodega (Hispanic grocery store). I turn on the fryer, get the lard hot and dip the oval end of the horn in for 5-10 seconds at a time. Check to see if it is...

    A Question for Wick Ellerby

Wick, I am sorry about the photos. There are teeth on the blade, so it is a file. It is a beautiful blade and I am pleased and proud to own it. The sheath is well made and whoever added the faux quillwork did a great job. Thank you for confirming your work. I appreciate it. Just Dave

    A Question for Wick Ellerby

Mr. Ellerby, I purchased this knife at the Kansas Muzzleloading Association Convention last weekend. I believe this is your mark on the blade. Could you shed any light on or not you made this knife? Approximately how long ago? Did you make the sheath as well? I appreciate your response. I...
