    Ball size - paper cartridges?

I recently decided to try paper cartridges in my .62 smoothbore. I first tried .600 balls with newsprint, but they were so tight I couldn't even start them down the bore. A month or so ago I picked up a bag of Rush Creek .595 balls at Dixon's to try. I rolled up a few cartridges and they ended...

To pee, or not to pee?

When ya gotta go, ya gotta go. I've never noticed it to be a problem. But then again, I hunt in NJ where the deer are never far from humans and our scent. A few years ago I killed a buck with my fly still down - I had just finished taking a leak.

Quite often, "new and improved" isn't.

    Green River Buffalo Skinner

Never mind. I just realized that you were asking about Chief Moonthunder's knife.

    Green River Buffalo Skinner

Cutler's rivets will look like pins. There are 2 pieces - 1 male and 1 female, and both have flat heads, similar to nails. The holes are countersunk to accommodate the heads. The male piece is pressed into the female piece, expanding it to hold the scales in place.

    black powder?

It all depends on your driver. My UPS driver will not leave powder without a signature, and it must be somebody over 21. He wouldn't even leave it with my 17 year old daughter.

    Green River Buffalo Skinner

The pins are actually cutler's rivets, so they're holding the scales on, but I also used some epoxy to keep them from loosening up as the wood expands and contracts.

    Green River Buffalo Skinner

This was my first attempt at knife making. I wanted to make something as a door prize for the Garden State Black Powder Association's Christmas party, so I decided to try my hand at a Green River Buffalo Skinner kit. The blade was aged with bleach and vinegar. The scales are black walnut...

    Tennessee Regs

I wouldn't say that. For example, my father has hunted for about 55 years. He has killed more than 100 deer with buckshot. Every one he has ever shot at has been dropped where it stood. I've killed somewhere around 20-25 deer with buckshot, with exactly the same result. Again, it's all about...

    Muzzleloading hunting declining?

It seems to me that the number of ML hunters has declined here in NJ since the crossbow has been allowed for anyone during archery season. Now guys can hunt from early September through late February with only one day closed (Christmas day) without the effort of learning to shoot a bow. On the...

    bare ball

I'm sure the other smoothbore shooters in my club, and especially last year's SB champion, would agree that I get pretty good accuracy with a bare ball and tow wadding.

    Pan Prime... 3 or 4 F?

In a field situation (hunting, woods walk) I prime with whatever is in my horn. In the case of my fowling piece, that's 2F. I've never noticed that ignition is any slower than with the 4F Swiss that I use at the range, where rules dictate that I use a priming flask.

Tips for casting round balls (modern equipment)?

Paul V. will be rolling in his grave when I say this, but if you're going to stick with ladle casting, it would be a good idea to seal up the bottom pour spout and remove the valve. This will prevent the pot from leaking, and it will get the valve assembly out of the way for you. Personally, I...

    CO2 Discharger Replacement Part

I was looking for one a few weeks back after my son misplaced mine. From what I could tell, the brass flintlock adapter has been discontinued. It appears that they are now only offering a universal plastic adapter with a rubber tip that is supposed to work on any muzzleloader.

    Goex vs. Swiss?

Swiss is a fine powder, but the benefits just don't justify paying the higher price. Right now it is more than twice the price of the Graf's powder I ordered a few weeks back. Graf's is $12 per pound. Swiss is $25. (Both prices are without shipping or hazmat charges.) My somewhat limited...

    Thimble size

I think Robby had the best suggestion (other than returning the gun). Send the barrel to Bobby Hoyt to be bored out to a .40 cal.

    November Shoots in Eastern Pennsylvania

I don't know if you're a member of Easton Fish & Game, but they're trying to boost participation in their black powder shoots, otherwise they'll be cancelled. No set dates, but when I hear of the next one I can let you know if you want.

    Priming Powder

I use Swiss 4F (Dixon's sells it re-packaged in 1/4 lb containers) in one of those fancy brass primers when I'm at a range where I'm not allowed to prime from my horn. Otherwise, I prime with whatever is in my horn - most often 2F Graf's. The Swiss 4F may be slightly faster, but not enough for...
