    Production matchlocks

I think the problem with many replica matchlocks is that they are built to a cost...and often by people who aren't shooters. The Hege and French guns are built for MLAIC competition - and fit the shooter like a Pennsylvania rifle. I visited the Musee de l'Armee in Paris, the French repro is an...

Any Repros of British Perc Revolvers?

Andy Baumkircher made a repro Adams. I think he might have made a half-dozen of them. I've got one...very nice, but I would not spend the money again. I've heard rumor of a Kerr repro in the works.

    Production matchlocks

Try http://arquebuserie-smgb.com/ I handled one of their guns at the 2006 World Championships, wish I had ordered one. The Hege matchlock is great (and no longer made), but weighs a ton. The French gun is a lot better mannered. Also, join the Yahoo MLAIC group and ask. There are three...

    Custom Pistol Builders

Hmm... Andy Baumkircher did some lovely work, but he took up a position with Steyr-Mannlicher's custom shop. Tilo Dedinski (www.dedinski.com) and Helmut Mohr (http://www.mohr-vorderlader.de/html/introduktion.html) both do excellent work. Pricey, but first-rate.

    What to Clean With?

Try Simple Green. I've been using it for 20 years, with excellent results. Flush thoroughly with water afterwards.

    Flintlock Pistol Accuracy

Get Swiss Null B priming powder. It's cleaner than anything Goex makes. And it IS black magic in a flintlock's pan. Use just a little, and spread it all over the pan.

    Rarest Replica Percussion Revolver

IIRC, there were 2,000 pair of the Hamilton-Burr sets made up. Back to the original topic...the rarest repro that I know of is the Baumkircher repro of the Adams revolver. I don't think he made more than three or four.

What do you see as the future for Traditional Muzzleloading

Actually, I think things are on the mend. First, the overall image of the shooting sports has improved significantly over the last few years. Yes, there are some pockets of hysteria, but the general image is pretty good. And traditional muzzleloading is in an excellent position to be an...

Civil War service pistol barrel length

There were several reasons. One was to ensure better performance. Another was accuracy, both theoretical (from the longer barrel and sight radius) and practical (from shifting the center of gravity forward). And if you compare the percussion revolvers to the single-shot military pistols...

    Another slowmatch source?

FWIW, one trick that I've seen used is to take cotton cord (which is usually nylon-cored), strip out the core, and run Dixie slow match through it. Then soak in nitrate solution, possibly with some dye in in so you know which match has been treated. The USIMLT uses this for Japanese matchlocks.

Range Report - Original Barwick 20 bore flintlock

Arquebus is right. Smoothbores need fairly heavy loads to shoot well. I would seriously try around 30 grains. You can play with the patch thickness, but from your description, it seems like you have a good tight fit - which is exactly what you want. I would also get some Swiss Null B priming...

    Save Your Pennies

Buy now...with the 150th of the Civil War coming up, those prices are likely to go up 50% in the next decade.

    Is anyone making match containers?

A minor question...is anyone making safety containers for matchlocks? The MLAIC requires that the burning end of a match be secured in a metal container unless you are actually shooting. Most American shooters just get a soft drink can, throw a few rocks in it for ballast, and use that. I've...

    What's the oldest shootable gonne?

I'm shooting a Wogdon & Barton flint dueller that I know was made before 1807...because that's when they closed shop.

    Competition Gun Advice Wanted

Nope. My 208S works fine. The trigger is great. But Andy Baumkircher does a trigger that is close to perfection as I ever expect a mechanical trigger to get. People talk about "glass-rod crisp", but Baumkircher DID it. I don't think you could get a trigger on a self-loading firearm to...

    Competition Gun Advice Wanted

I found the Mang accurate enough, but too muzzle-heavy to be shot well. I'd shoot 10, 9, 10, 9, 9, 8, 9....with the point of impact slowly drooping. Got a Hege-Siber and shot as well with my first target as the Mang had ever done in my hand. Right now, I'm shooting a Baumkircher underhammer...

    Competition Gun Advice Wanted

Back to the OP... A single-shot pistol will outshoot a revolver. Although the difference is quite small with high-quality guns. But in the price range you are talking about, the difference will be noticable. You can get away with testing a revolver and picking the chamber that produces the...

GOEX trying to get BP declassified as explosive

GOEX is trying to get black powder declassified as an explosive (category 1.1) and reclassified as a propellant (category 1.3). See http://www.goexpowder.com/index.html for details. This has BIG implications. It would significantly cut the cost and trouble of shipping powder. I'm not sure if...

BLACKPOWDER - BUYING & SELLING PER ATF

No, not ostrich. BATF is notorious for giving "official" answers to questions...then not living by them. The NFA community can quote you several dozen examples.
