Powder charge for .45 cal rifle

My .45 has a 1:48 twist. I use 60 grains of FFg for 25 yards, 70 grains of FFg for 50 yards and 80 grains of FFg for 100 yard targets. One grain per caliber is too light for most uses.

    failure to ignite cap?

ALL OF THE ABOVE COMMENTS ARE GOOD ADVICE. I BUILT A RIFLE YEARS AGO AND PURPOSELY MADE IT WITH A SHORT HAMMERFALL BECAUSE IT IS AN OFFHAND RIFLE. OVER THE YEARS AS THE MAINSPRING SLOWLY WEAKENED IT BEGAN THE SAME PROBLEM, NOT IGNITING THE CAP CONSISTENTLY. AFTER TRYING ALL OF THE ABOVE FROM...

Hard Chrome for a Muzzleloading barrel

Because--- I have had two of my rifles (competition) hard chromed 25-35 years ago and shot thousands of rounds through them. They are much easier to clean between shots, there is no apparent wear and the accuracy is the same as 35-40 years ago. I do not believe it is reasonable for a normal...

Hard Chrome for a Muzzleloading barrel

I have contacted several companies that were suggested and can not find anyone to do individual "hard chrome" of barrels bores. ANYONE have any other ideas or info?

Hard Chrome for a Muzzleloading barrel

I have had two of my target guns barrels "hard chromed" over 30 years ago and it has been a great experience. Accuracy remains longer, easier to clean and less susceptible to rusting. HOWEVER I an not find anyone that does it today. My two were done by Marker Machine Tool in Illinois, who I can...

    Favorite 45 caliber loading?

    I shoot a .45 in Competition and use 80 gr C&H 2 F (which is about 2 1/2 F) and a .451 ball for 50 and 100 yd accuracy, which is excellent. I use 65 gr. for 25 yds with a .445 ball in my Douglas bbl 1:48 twist

    Cast ball hardness comparisons

I have found as several of you have already. There is no difference in accuracy, although we should use a slightly thinner patch with harder balls when loading.

    Cast ball hardness comparisons

I ran out of pure lead and have cast some balls about wheel weight hardness. Has anyone compared the accuracy of lead round balls to a harder alloy?

    Cleaning Solutions

I have been using detergent and water for a LONG time, but recently tried the Alcohol, Hydrogen Perozide, Soft Soap mixture which cleans incredibly. However, I seem to be getting more afterrusting. Has anyone else used this and are you getting more barrel rusting to controlthan with water and...
