Am I the only one in the Great Lakes Region?

I came to Midland MI 45 years ago when I got out of the army. Still here and will be buried here. Grew up in the cornfields of Iowa but the pine trees of Michigan beat it hands down.

Carl Shirley- Gunbuilder- Anyone ever heard of him?

When I see the screws on the patchbox timed, it says a quality build.

    T/C Flintlock coonversion from caplock

I ran into that same issue when putting an L&R lock into my GPR. I ended up using an anvil and ball peen hammer on the back side of the lock plate to "stretch" it a little to make it fit. Took a bit of time and patience but it worked and you don't notice unless you remove the lock for cleaning.

trying something totally new to me

It was agonizing enough once, I don't intend to do it again. What would be the odds of getting another piece of wood like that and all the hardware at a bargain price? I am mainly a woodworker, not a carver or shaper of gunstocks. I'll shoot it until the day I can no longer lift it and then...

trying something totally new to me

The drum size is 5/16 x 24. I don't know the maker since it was purchased about 25 years ago by the guy I bought all the parts from. Back in the days before on-line shopping from a local store known then as Ye Olde Black Powder Shoppe. We all miss that place. That rifle came out incredibly...

trying something totally new to me

I was busy over the holidays and it was good therapy for me. Finished (for now) and waiting for warm weather to take it out for sighting in.

trying something totally new to me

Got "Recreating the American Longrifle" by Buchele, Shumway, Alexander to use as a first guide. Also found that the stock is marked as Tenn and not Penn. Going to start some work this weekend after turkey binge. Something to do while sitting down.

trying something totally new to me

Thanks to everyone. I will be cutting it off since there is no way to set it without drilling a hole in the trigger plate and then there would be no place for the tang bolt to thread into the front of the plate. The gun will be mainly a shooter although I will do my best to make it look nice...

trying something totally new to me

About 25 years ago, a friend purchased parts to make his own rifle. And it then sat collecting dust until now his arthritis makes working on it impossible. Soo I bought the box of parts along with stock and barrel ($300) so I can give the project a try. I have worked on other guns so it is...

    shot size

I like to use #4 or #2 shot. Fewer to pick out when cleaning the game. Used to hate it with 7.5 shot when you'd see all these little spots with fur or feathers sticking out. Start plucking it out and eventually you'd have a little ball of fur/feathers with a small shot in the middle.

    hearing protection

Lost a lot of my hearing to 155 and 175 guns in the Army. Now I wear Walker electronic muffs when shooting or hunting with the volume cranked up so I can hear yet have it shut down when a loud noise is detected. Constant ringing drives me nuts when it is really quiet. I have to have a radio...

    What is a smoothbore rifle?

A smoothbore rifle typically has a rear sight. The fowling piece only the front sight.

    Shooting system

209 primer shooting would probably work OK with the 50 cal hard rubber balls that Roundball has tested and used for target practice at shorter ranges. They can also be reused. I would bet the patches could also be reused. I noticed that there didn't appear to be any lube on the patches. That...

    Wads, lubed or no?

After I pour in the shot, I usually squirt in a little olive oil down the sides of the barrel before pushing down the over shot card. Keeps things soft without fouling the powder or messing around trying to rub lube on the edges of the wads.

    Ramrod won't fit

So did I -- great water balloons! :rotf:

What do you pay for scrap lead?

Does anyone stop by a local stained glass shop? The one near me has lots of scrap soft lead came from refurbished windows. Last time I got some at 50 cents/lb.

    DIY Shooter bench

Measure group sizes?? :idunno: I have a word document for a nice take-apart shooting bench from plywood but don't know how to post it.

    BP and substitutes

For those who can't get real BP or only a small amount, how much BP would you need in a flintlock to reliably set off the main charge of 777 or pyrodex? Naturally the pan is always charged with BP.
