    cured some bacon

This is a follow-up on my post above with a picture of the bacon I made using my technique above. You can ignore the bowl of burnt ends from some pulled pork.

    cured some bacon

I would agree with the above that you need to keep them in the smoker longer at real low temp's. I do quite a bit of smoking and I dry cure my bellies in the fridge for over a week, using Cure #1 and misc. spices. Then I put them in my smoker, where I cold smoke them (theoretically it should...

    Hello from Arizona

Welcome, Rob, from a neighbor who lives right across the road in Peoria. This is a great forum! :hatsoff:

    new holster

I wouldn't do anything to it....it looks antiqued and well worn just as it is (assuming that is what you are trying to get). Just leave it alone.

    HolsterWorld

Just an added postscript, after the holster has settled down, dried completely, etc.... I don't have a need for the hammer thong. The fit is great! BTW, thanks Wick for the info on why/when the hammer thong is needed. :hatsoff:

    HolsterWorld

I take all the criticism as positive. The leg thong was there on the one holster because it was made totally with oil tanned leather and had a tendency to grip the revolver. I am still way down on the learning curve (recognizing that Swampy is the comparison for quality) and have some...

    HolsterWorld

Just finished my latest: Carving leather, overlaid with oil tanned leather with spots. Carving is old-style, swivel knife only. I still need to add a retainer thong on it. Pictures are not the greatest I only have one revolver, 1851 Navy, so all the holsters I have made are for it. I...

Ben Avery Range-Phoenix AZ Open House 3/31-4/1/2012 Revisited

Probably can't read all the detail, but you can see that it is every accommodation imaginable. Here's a path to that map (you can enlarge). http://www.azgfd.gov/outdoor_recreation/basf_facilities.shtml

Coolest holster in the whole world

I will join in the large crowd to heap praise on your latest effort. There's history on those flap-over holsters, as noted in that great book, Packing Iron. Hope you aren't laid up too long with that rotator cuff. Let me know if I can do anything for you during that time. I will forward...

    Straight Razor Shaving

No, that is my point. Two hands is not easier for me. Admittedly, there are a few spots where I point the blade end to the left, because I can't get my hand to hold the blade pointing to the right. But using two hands is definitely not easier for me. :v

    Straight Razor Shaving

Okay, since its my topic, I guess I can do whatever I want with it, other than start a war. So I am going to try and get it off the metallurgy and back to the basic shaving operation. :rotf: I have an observation and a question. The observation is that since I started shaving with the...

HERE WE GO AGAIN!! ANOTHER TOPIC FROM HELL!! :rotf: :rotf: :rotf:

    Straight Razor Shaving

:dead: At the risk of starting another "Post From Hell", I wanted to let everyone who joined in to my last post (I think half the world did) know, that my theory of my lack of skill in sharpening a blade was my downfall in using an old fashioned straight razor. I am now using one with the...

    Hello from good ol' Germany

Welcome to the Forum! Say hello to a former exchange student we hosted here in Arizona and who is still a very good friend (he and his whole family). He grew up in Otterfing and is about to get his college degree in Munich. We spent 3 weeks at the family home while visiting Bavaria in 2007...

Navy 1851 Holster TIGHT Slim Jim

I have to agree with you Willie....oil tanned leather doesn't work the same after wetting as chrome tanned leather does. I added a leg tie to this holster and it really isn't as tight as it was to start with. It just takes a small amount of hold-down now for an easy draw. I guess I am happy...

Navy 1851 Holster TIGHT Slim Jim

Well, I ventured into some new areas, with help from Swampy. Here was the criteria I was going after: 1. Make my own pattern 2. Do one out of oil tanned leather; i.e. a soft holster 3. Make it look older 4. Use some spots 5. Make it a Slim Jim style Assessment: 1. Even taking Swampy's...

    Holster Disappointment

Thanks for that input, Crockett. It will be considered in my future efforts towards better holsters. :hatsoff:

    Me and my father

As above, make sure either you or your dad save a copy of the picture (or others like it) over the years and don't let them get thrown out with the trash. You will wish, like I do now, that I had some of them. :nono:

    Holster Disappointment

Thanks everyone for your positive comments. As I said, I'm happy with the build, but not the finish. I will continue to work on improving that part of my leatherwork. :hatsoff: :hatsoff: :hatsoff:

How much blood is to much?

"Handmade" doesn't just mean you made it by hand.....it also refers to how much "hand" you sacrificed during the making of something. A significant part of the makeup of charges for items you make are the cost of bandages, pliers to remove needles from your fingers, super glue to close cuts...
