    I`m confused

Flashpanner, That's a beautiful piece of work. I'd love to see the finished rifle. Dick

Help for a sharp edge others might like to try...

Rick, I'm sure they're good. I bought an almost full set of the palm handled ones from Woodcraft, one at a time, a couple of years ago. Best carving investment I've ever made. Dick

    Adirondack deer/bear

I go every year. That top picture is the Jessup river looking downstream towards Speculator. Middle picture is West Canada Creek looking north, taken from the Noblesboro bridge on Route 8. Don't recognize the bottom picture. I haven't shot a deer in quite a few years but other than not...

    Brass Supply

Try McMaster Carr. Look in the Raw Materials section, bottom right of the page. No order is too small and they ship fast. You can spend days browsing their web site. Dick,

    Dunlap Woodcraft Rifle Kits

Beautiful work Birddog. Everything you say regarding Bronze and Brass is correct. Bronze is a little harder to file and the investment cast stuff is much easier to clean up than sand cast Brass. The one thing I do like about Brass (I try to use sand cast always, but that's 'cause I'm cheap)...

    Jim Chambers Siler lock??

I've got a lock from back in the days when Bud Siler was still making them and always thought it was a fantastic lock. Last year I bought a Chambers Round-Faced English lock and I'm absolutely astonished by the difference. I think this thing could light off a pan of powder under water! I've...

    Engraved Trigger Guard

So did you ever go back to the push graver? I've never mastered it. I'm pretty good with a chasing hammer but that push work just baffles me. I'm definitely at that point where the design part has become the hard part. Looks like you've done a real fine job of figuring that out, congrats. Dick

    What makes curly maple curly?

My uncle cut a Maple up in the Adirondacks three years ago clearing a lot for a camp. The tree lay mostly off the ground for the better part of two years before anyone bothered cutting any of it up. When we finally started blocking the top up and splitting it, we found it was curly so I put a...

That's not even fair. Good on ya though. Beautiful animals. Dick

    Set triggers question

Set triggers were around all during the period. They'd be correct on a higher end gun. But they probably were never all that common except on target rifles. If you're building a new rifle it's easy to set up a single trigger for a light pull by locating the pivot point correctly. It's...

    Antiqued Powderhorn

Thank you grey whiskers. I used dark brown RIT dye for the tip and golden yellow with a small bit of sunshine orange for the body. I'm very happy with the results. Wish I could learn to draw though, I'm not satisfied with the scrimshaw. I have the same problem with my rifle carvings. Dick

    Antiqued Powderhorn

It's already plugged with a simple pine plug. Yea, that's the bow of my canoe. I like working with my hands after spending all day in front a computer. Here's a few more of my projects. http://mysite.verizon.net/rmillet/index.html Dick

    Antiqued Powderhorn

Well here's my first try at an antiqued powderhorn. What'd yall think? It originally had the same coloration as the unfinished horn above it. Dick

    powder horn thickness..................

Are you buying semi-finished horns, i.e., with the butt plug already in place or doing all of the work yourself. If there's no butt plug in place you can get a pretty good idea of how much you've got to work with just by looking down the horn before you plug it. It's a little trickier if it's...

    Removing pinned barrels

Guess I'm in the minority here, I remove my barrels every time I clean the gun. I've got 2 rifles that are over 20 years old and haven't worn out a pin hole yet. I slightly chamfer the ends of the pins and always take them out the way I put them in when I built the guns (driven in from the...

    Jaeger in Cherry?

Why a Cherry pike shaft of course. I have to agree though, staining Cherry is a sin against nature. From the time you build it to several years down the road it'll constantly change color if left unstained. Eventually it will have the most beautiful deep red color you've ever seen. It's far...

    Saved one from the fire!

We were splitting some wood up at camp in the Adks this weekend and found a block of Curly Maple. I grabbed chunk and cut a slab out this week, planed, sanded and stained it to see what it looks like: Now for the best part. The bottom fifteen or so feet of the tree is uncut! I can...

    Tapping question

There used to be a Guideboat builder up by Long Lake, NY who demanded that every screw in every boat that came out of his shop had the slot parallel to the bottom board. We're talking about 2500+ screws per boat here! I tried on my last boat but gave it up after a couple of hundred. Dick

    Finished for better or worse

Ask and ye shall receive.... The closeup page It's not my first rifle, but it is the first in almost 20 years. Real life got in the way for a bit there. Dick

    Finished for better or worse

It's a .62. The Davis lock is quite a bit bigger. Uses a bigger flint to. The mainspring is lots more powerful and it takes quite a bit more effort to pull the hammer back. Sure throws a shower of sparks though. We'll see just how well it shoots this weekend.
