    Dixie Jaeger rifle

I have had one for several years and it shoots round balls just fine with 80 grains of 2F powder and a .015 patch. Bowling pins fair common at 100 yards.

Max load for an Italian reproduction enfield

You need to paper patch those smooth sided Pritchett Bullets or you will lead the barrel.

range report: new pedersoli 54 cal kentucky pistol !(pics)

Good shooting. It's plenty accurate but you may want to get another for a second shot. Hogs can be a little tough to put down quickly especially at handgun ranges.

Ever Had A BOOM When Loading?

Never had one but have a couple both with minie rifles. These are more prone to cook-offs than older types because they can be fired much faster. I would think that flintlock or percussion muskets would likely suffer this as well when loaded for rapidity of fire such as would be done in a...

    Is This Possible?

The gun could handle it. Val Forgett took one to Africa in the early 70's and took all of the Big Five with that load. It performed well on all but elephant. It didn't have the power for a frontal brain shot but was adequate for side brain shots. The bullet was a minie design with a thick skirt...

    skirmishers

Don't own one but wish I did. He makes a good barrel and they shoot. a steaight 3 groove can be made to shoot pretty well but they require a lot of load developement and are intolerant to deviation. A hoyt barrel will shoot out of the box. You will encounter problems with minie skirts to be the...

    sprue up? or down?

Sprue up for me. If there is an air pocket in the ball it will always be oriented the same each time. With the sprue down you can never be sure of its orientation. The larger the bore the more critical this becomes. JMO

    new scratch

Look at it this way it is now a custom gun with your own personal mark on it. don't feel too bad I think most of us have done something similar a time or two.

Lyman Great Plains with .54 minie?

The best solution for blown skirts with heavy powder charges is to have a new base pin made to throw a thicker skirt. This is a simple job on Lyman style moulds but is a little more complicated on a Lee mould which stays attached to the mould blocks. Unlike RB'S one size does not fit all...

    cross draw holster

Cabelas has one. I originally bouth for a 58 remington but it swallowed that gun so I tried the dragoon in it and it was almost like that was what they had in mind when they made it.

Octagon, to 16 Flats, to Wedding Band, then Round....

That's the way it goes. Appears to be a nice gun and I'm no "Expert" but I know what I like.

    Buckshot??

#4 makes a good defense load at 10-20 yards but is way too small for use on anything larger than a coyote or a burglar. Here in the south the choice has always been nothing smaller than #1 buck for deer with 0 and 00 being preferred.
