    Thanks sky chief

Eric Krewson, knowing what you know now with the second gun you mentioned, if you could do it again would you get the jug choke, or just stick with the Skychief load? I guess what I am asking is, do you think the Skychief load with the jug choke is any better than Skychief load with no jug?

    Reinforcing the wrist

LD, I did consider that, especially in light of the fact that a cross section of the stock at the lock/breech area would reveal that there is less wood in that area than in the wrist. That is likely the weakest part of the stock and changing the stiffness of the surrounding area might or might...

    Reinforcing the wrist

The wrist on a recent fowler build came out a little skinnier than I was planning, about 1.25" in diameter. I had the thought of reinforcing it as a prophylactic, this I would do by drilling a hole from the trigger guard mortice to the tang mortice and installing a steel rod with epoxy, much...

    Bare balls with jug choke?

I'm thinking about getting my 20 gauge fowler jug choked. I know you can shoot PRB with a jug choke, but what about bare balls?

    Underlug hole elongation...

For those who might still be questioning the need for slots, what he described has to do with barrel harmonics which is a separate but equal reason to provide slots.

    Underlug hole elongation...

A jewelers saw is one of those tools that you don’t need often, but when you do it is worth its weight in gold. Relatively inexpensive to boot.

    Repair this barrel lug?

Does anyone know where I could source an Anyone know where I might source a thick underlug? The ones I have are 1/8" thick but the ones sold by TOTW and MBS are only 1/16" thick.

    Repair this barrel lug?

Thanks for all the replies. If I replace the lug, then I run the risk of it not fitting well in the notch that is already cut in the bottom of the barrel channel and a sloppy fit will look bad from the ramrod groove. Using solder will risk the lug coming off when heating and might be too soft...

    Underlug hole elongation...

Hardest thing about the jeweler's saw is not braking the blade by fumbling once you get it connected. Otherwise I found it to be a very easy procedure and a lot less risk of ending up enlarging the hole too much by trying to cut sideways with a drill bit to make the "slot".

    Repair this barrel lug?

I don't have access to brazing or welding equipment, but would filling the hole with solder and re-drilling it work?
  11. Onojutta

    Underlug hole elongation...

The diameter does not change and so the height of the notch remains the same as the diameter. I use 1/16” hole so I am providing 1/16” allowance for movement back and forth in the long direction. I am sure there won’t be that much movement, but as long as you get the height of the notch right...

    Underlug hole elongation...

Take a look at the picture I posted in my thread about repairing. I drill the first hole through the stock and lug, then remove the barrel and drill a hole on either side of the first hole. Just close enough that the bit doesn't follow the first hole. Then I use a jeweler's saw to turn the...

    Repair this barrel lug?

I drilled the hole for this barrel lug pretty darn close to the edge. The picture makes it look a litle thicker than it is, but the thickness of the steel is no more than the thickness of a fingernail on the outter edge, and I'm concerned that over time this could break, rust away, etc. This...

Firing blanks from a flintlock rifle

I ended up using a cotton ball over the powder. Worked great.

Firing blanks from a flintlock rifle

What is a good load to fire blanks from a .50 flintlock rifle for demonstration purposes? How many grains, what to use on top of the powder to hold it in place, etc.? Thanks

Fowler side plate: round faced or flat?

I agree, getting the screw to sit flush is tricky. I did achieve that by removing brass in a bit of a dental procedure with a Dremel (I know, I know), and this is what has resulted in the uneven surfaces. I'm afraid that if I used a new plate altogether, the same thing might happen where the...

Fowler side plate: round faced or flat?

This side plate for a British fowler came with a shoulder around the screw heads. On the top screw, I didn't get the hole perfectly centered so the screw wasn't concentric with the shoulder. To deal with this, I filed off the shoulder. However, because the plate face is round, this causes the...

    Ramrod shortage?

Neither TOTW nor MBS have hickory ramrod blanks of most common sizes in stock. Anyone know why the shortage, or where else to get them?

    Fowler ramrod ends

I came across a thread on here from a while back where someone said you can taper a ramrod by clamping a metal washer in a vise and drawing the rod through the washer. I'm going to give that a try soon, seems like it could work if the washer is stoned to a sharp edge. The fixture that Larry...
