    Canteen Question

I have been researching canteens as I would like to add one to my kit. My character saw action as a mounted ranger in 1832. The canteen that seems to be most common is the cheese box style. This is very similar to what I have seen in my research. Would this canteen be appropriate for my...

    carry a '51

That is not the best way to train. I completed the police academy here in California. We practiced shooting one handed both strong side and weak side as well as the Weaver. We also had night shoots with and without a flashlight. I currently work in juvenile corrections. I have done this for...

Ball and patch thickness for .50cal TC Hawken

I shoot a .490 ball with .015 patch. The main charge is 75 grains of 3f. The load is an accurate load tested at about 35 yards. I still have the stock sights on my rifle.

So you want a cap and ball revolver?

This should definitely be made into a sticky. It answered many of my questions. However, I have one question regarding the loading procedure. I have had conversations with my father about shooting cap and ball revolvers. He mentioned putting grease over the clinder holes to prevent chain...

    How much prime?

You will know when you have it right as there will be little to no delay between the pan charge igniting and the main charge going off. I use about three grains of 4f for my pan charge. I shoot a .50 T/C Hawken. Part of the fun of shooting flint lock muzzle loaders is finding out what works...

    Pietta v. Uberti

Question for the gurus of C&B revolvers. Which company makes the better revolver Pietta, or Uberti? I ask as I am interested in picking up an 1860 Army or 1851 Navy. They seem to be fairly close in price. What about in quality?

Black powder people a few questions RE: flintlocks

I am with you armakiller. 100 grains of FFF is highest load recommended for a .50 caliber according to Pyrodex. Sounds like a recipe for disaster to me. The .54 caliber is supposed to handle 120 grains according to their website.

Load for a .50 cal Thompson Hawken

I use a .490 Hornady Ball with a .015 patch. Provides reasonable accuracy. I shoot a 60 grain load of FFF in the main charge, and a 3 grain load of FFFF in the pan. No complaints with that load the rifle printed in the 9 ring without adjusting the stock adjustable rear sight right out of the...

    Cabelas Blue Ridge Flinter

I agree with you brown bear. The Blue Ridge is a decent rifle. I have had the opportunity to shoot a flint and a cap in .32 caliber. I found nothing wrong with either. I was able to hit the target with reasonable accuracy considering it was the first time I shot a flint or cap.

    Combination Hawk/Knife sheath

I have seen such a carriage. It is on a package of patterns from Eagle's View. I bought the pattern through the possibles shop. The pattern is teh Longhunter's Leather Accessories Pattern. The item you are looking for is called a Hawk and Bayonet Carriage. It looks like it hangs from a...

    Missed Introducing Myself

Not so new to the forum. Missed introducing myself. However, thought I would share that I have just bought my T/C Hawkens from Jedidiah Starr, and I am anxiously awaiting its arrival. My Dad introduced me to shooting black powder with his Blue Ridge Rifles. I had the opportunity to shoot...

Left Hand shooting Right Hand Flintlock

I am left eye dominant and have similar issue as I have shot left handed most of my life. I recently had the opportunity to begin shooting black powder. My Dad allowed me to shoot his Blue Ridge Rifle. He has both flintlock and caplock. I have shot both, and have since decided that this is a...
