    Sunday at the Range

It was a partly sunny day today with temperatures in the upper 40s and no wind, which is not typical for April in Oregon's Willamette Valley. It was a perfect day to sight in a new Lyman 54 GPR flinter and spend the day shooting with a very old friend. I met Jim 36 years ago during our...

Lyman 54 cal great plains sighting in

I use 80 gr of Goex FF, 530 hornady ball, .015 pillow ticking & McKenzie River patch lube. The chronograph reads 1585 ft/sec and I have a 4" group at 100 yds or meat in the pan. Happy Shooting!

    Navy Arms Question

Thanks all for your quick replies. An accurate depiction of the 1803 HF is very important to me. I have looked at the kits offered on line by TOW and the Rifle Shop. If I wasn't stretched for time right now I'd do the kit. The 1803 rifle offered by D&N Mercantile is made by Euroarms and I am...

    Navy Arms Question

I would like to hear from people who have knowledge or experience with Navy Arms products. I have wanted an 1803 Harpers Ferry rifle for a while now. A local gun dealer has 2 used rifles (54 & 58 cal) for sale for $750 each and manufactured by Navy Arms. I would use this for a club shoot gun...

Replacement barrel for Lyman Trade Rifle

I need to replace the barrel on my 54 cal/perc Lyman Trade Rifle. Lyman sells a replacement barrel with a 1 in 48 twist for $129.95. Are there custom or premium barrels that anyone has had success with? Any recommendations? Thanks. Kevin

    need a ram rod

Mainiac: I agree with Paul that you need more than 1 rod. I bought a 3 piece brass ramrod that fits in my rangebox that is perfect for the range and cleaning at home. I have one rifle with the original wooden ramrod and a second rifle that has a black plastic rod I made myself. Local...

    What to Clean With?

David: I know folks who run a patch with alcohol on it down their barrels after they have cleaned them with a soap & water solution and a dry patch. They swear by it and they shoot well on the range. I have also seen them swab their barrel with an alcohol patch after their guns have been in...

    What to Clean With?

Jack: Your cleaning method sounds good. A friend got me to use 409 as a cleaner and that works well for me. On the range, I like Ballistol or a similar product for lubing a patch or a quick wipe after several shots. For cleaning after a day in the field, I have been happy with a product...

Which BP shotgun should I buy?

Thanks everyone for your replies to my post. I have been checking on prices for smoothbores. The owner of a local BP shop I trade with has a locally built custom trade gun from his personal collection he is offering me for $1200. The gun has a browned barrel and curly maple stock. He has...

Which BP shotgun should I buy?

I have been shooting BP rifles and pistols for about a year now and want to get a shotgun. I would use it mostly for our monthly club shoots, at an encampment or occasionally for ducks and upland birds. I have looked at the Pedersoli webpage and am considering 3 12 gauge side by sides, the...

    Lubricating a lock

Thanks everyone for the great advice and a bit of a history lesson. I am still getting started with blackpowder and learning much if this as I go. Again, many thanks! Kevin

    Lubricating a lock

I was cleaning up an old Lyman trade rifle and noticed that the lock was bone dry with some light rust starting to form. I cleaned it all up with a small wire brush and some 4/0 steel wool. Can any one recommend a product for lubricating the tumbler, sear, spring and etc? Any advice would be...

    plugged nipple

Wattsy, Grab a spare nipple for your range box when you buy a replacement nipple for your rifle. A good cleaner for your nipple is 409 household cleaner and an old toothbrush. I soak mine in 409 while cleaning my guns and they come out as clean as new. Rinse with water and let dry and you're...

    Traditions Trapper pistol accuracy?

Jeff, I have had my Trapper since right after Christmas. Several folks in our BP group have them and everyone seems happy with them. There should be a tread on this subject on this forum (Which Pistol to Buy?) that ran on about December 28 or so. The general opinion of that tread was that...

    sight recommendations for GPR

Brownbear, I too have been contemplating what to do about the sights on my GPR and my trade rifle due to my "old eyes". When you changed out your rear sight, did you leave the factory front sight on your rifle? I have struggled to see the target clearly when attempting to shoot my BP rifles...

    Using Windex

Logan, On a similar note, a fellow in our blackpowder group carries a small bottle with 409 cleaner in his range box. He uses that for cleanup like you are describing as well as for cleaning his weapons at the end of the day. I have tried it and found that it really works well. So 409 is a...

    Worth it?

Very nice rifle, Jumpshot. But if you decide you want your money back and Snake-Eyes changes his mind, I'll give you your money back for that gun also. Enjoy your new rifle. Kevin
