    Fiddleback walnut look

How much are we talking here? I make in the forties per hour straight time, and can usually pick up overtime at time and a half if I want to, so figure 60 an hour. How many hours of work does this take? If you are talking about an extra hundred bucks or so, it is probably worth it to just get...

Where do you draw the line?

This is why we don't let children draw our line in the sand. It's as crooked as all get out. As far as where to draw the line, I shoot muzzleloaders because I enjoy the historical aspect of them. That means I try to be as historically accurate as I can afford to be, which isn't all that great...

    Footwear experts please…

You don't need to use sinew if you are portraying a European making their own moccasins. Native, maybe so, but Europeans would have had access to plenty of different cordage options, especially if they were used to carrying goods for trade. Many of the resources I've seen about making...

Looking for Information on Long rifles & Hawkens

A man could use the height of his front sight to help estimate range if he knows his gun well. If the height of the front sight matches up with the normal height of a man at 100 yards, then a normal man would be half the height of his front sight at 200 yards, etc. As much as we like to think...

Looking for Information on Long rifles & Hawkens

Another thing to keep in mind is that rifles shooting patched round balls of any size have a limited range not because of inherent inaccuracy, but more from shot to shot consistency. A slight variation in velocity can make a big difference in bullet drop at extended ranges. For a gun that is...

    Eminent main spring failure?

As a self proclaimed grammar nazi, I approve of this post.

    Footwear experts please…

No offense, but pretty much any of the kits you would buy from a leather supplier are not going to be correct. If all you are looking for is not "out of place" for the event you are going for, then feel free to do whatever you want. Actual historically correct moccasins are easy enough to make...

    1805-1815…what style of pants?

Cotton was starting to be ginned much more commonly in the South at the time, so it wouldn't be out of place, but it probably wasn't the prevalent fabric quite yet. You could research to see what the numbers of cotton gins in your area were in those times to get a better idea to how available it...

    Footwear experts please…

Those look more like bottes sauvage,, the French Canadian high top version of soulier de boeuf, which are also thought to be essentially the same as shoepacks by many historians. Not sure what era ones with laces would fit into. Edit: was replying to Brazos John. Loyalist Dave posted while I...

    Footwear experts please…

Just make some. They are easy enough. Use the German tanned from crazy crow for the most historical accuracy, or use a fairly thin veg tanned leather, as I'm sure there were plenty of moccasins made with commercially tanned leather back in the day as well, particularly by European settlers who...

    Hearing Protection?

I wear plugs or muffs when just shooting, and I carry plugs with me while hunting, sometimes muffs if I am in a blind. I don't wear them while I am hunting, but put them on or in if I have time before making a shot.

    1800-1820s Woodsman apparel?

I'll have to look back, but I'm pretty sure I've seen extant Native American garments that pretty much fit the definition of a hunting shirt from the time. I've even seen instructions on how to make them that pretty much line up with how the Europeans made them, except the cape was more of a...

    1800-1820s Woodsman apparel?

On cotton, you can look up records of cotton gins in the area you are depicting. If you can find cotton gins, there would have been cotton clothing available for pretty much all classes. As far as hunting shirts go, I suspect that at some point during this time period the capes became optional...

    The Triple Seven Rust Challenge

I've gone as much as a week without cleaning after triple seven with no issues. Would not recommend as a matter of practice, but if something happens and you aren't able to clean it for a few days and it is in a low humidity environment I wouldn't start sweating too much.

    Zelle or PayPal

My account was hacked a couple weeks ago. Luckily I noticed that "I" had apparently listed a couple of guns for sale that I don't own and wouldn't likely sell if I did. I was able to change my password, report "my" own posts and post up on the threads that I hadn't posted them. Things might have...

Thoughts on shorter barrels (or…Stop me from my blaspheme!)

I wouldn't shorten the barrel unless I was sure that would fix the problem. But if it looks like it will then shorten away.

That's too many posts about head hunting, which has nothing to do with muzzleloaders. Locked.

Does BATF check on black powder purchasers ?

The BATF has lately been getting a little screwy. They've been doing things like raiding manufacturers of items that they had previously determined were legal because they suddenly decided to change their interpretation of the law. While they haven't done any significant raids on consumers, they...

    Hard times for BP shooters

Just because the ATF interprets a law that way does not mean that a federal judge will interpret it that way. The "small arms ammunition and components thereof" exemption may very well exempt powder intended for use in muzzleloaders, or it may not. The ATF probably looks the other way in those...

Can someone school a newbie on selling here?

They don't just do that with non active accounts. Last week I checked the classifieds section only to see that I had apparently posted a couple guns for sale at unbelievably low prices. Of course I had to report myself after I changed my password and posted on those threads that I had not posted...
