Optimum flash hole distance from breech face?

What do you consider the optimum distance for the flashole to be in relation to the breech face. I just drilled, tapped, and installed this flash hole liner tonight in my .75 caliber matchlock barrel. It's coming in right around 5/32nds, or .16 inch from breech face to the center of the flash...

Last day of flintlock season... no luck, but...

Had a blast anyway, 16 degrees. Saw 10 deer where I was sitting. Called it a season around 5:45 pm. On the walk out had 3 doe just over the crest of the hill at about 60 yards. Gently laid my cushion and seat down, set the trigger, took aim at the lead deer, click, whooosh......silence...

Couple quick pics of my matchlock build....

Got the barrel and tang inlet about as good as I'm gonna get. It's a Rifle Shoppe English style matchlock kit. I had them do the Barrel channel and ramrod hole, as I don't have the skill or desire to do that part. It's got a Colerain octagon to round, .775 smoothbore barrel. Barrel measures...

Man I love hunting in the snow.

Took the GPR out this evening to one of my local spots. Since it's on a northern facing hill, I figured thered still be a little snow there. I was right. I wore my new snow camo and settled into my spot. I love being able to see further into the nooks and crannies. I spotted at least 6 different...

    Matchlock build has started..

Now that winter is here, and hunting seasons winding down, I've got some time. I started my Rifle Shoppe English style matchlock. The barrel channel required not much if any attention to seat the barrel. I've been inletting the breech plug and tang the past few days, and have gotten it almost...

Pa hunters, do you wear camo during the intlock season

And, do you make any attempt to camo your firearm? I have a couple camo options that I use during the late season. One is a basic older style of Im guessing Mossy Oak Obsession, fall brown jacket, and a newer style of the same pants. Another is an insulated jumpsuit with a darker Realtree...

    Matchlock kit arrived yesterday.

My matchlock kit from The Rifle Shoppe arrived today. All I can say is "Wow", this thing is huge. The cast parts are very good quality. The stock is walnut and is well made. Looks like it's going to take some time to assemble, but doesn't appear too difficult. Stock has barrel channel and...

    Matchlock kit on its way.

I called The Rifle Shoppe the other day inquiring about my matchlock kit. I had placed the order back in July. Was given the 3 week time frame that I've heard others mention was untrue. Glad I called.. I was told they had been waiting on a part so it got put on the back burner. I was also told...

Should be a good squirrel season.

I'm sitting in my favorite squirrel area. Had planned to get out early this morning, but you know how plans go. Anyway, I'm here now. A lot of foliage on the trees so seeing any up high is pretty much not going to happen. Good news is acorns are dropping all around me so they're bound to come...

    Poured some lead today.

Squirrel season opens Saturday here. I got down to 9 rounds of .311 balls after my trip to the range over the weekend. So today I dug out the Lee double cavity mold, Mr. SPARKY (MAPP TORCH), my old cast iron ladle, and went to work. I melted down an old 10 ounce fishing sinker, and within about...

.32 caliber about ready for squirrel season.

Today's target at 25 yards. 25 grains 3fg, .311 ball, approx .010 patch. First three shot group covered by the tape. Tapped front sight a hair to the right, fired three more, the top three. Then fired the last 2 on bottom. Dot is a 2 inch., so I'm about 1 1/8 inch right, and slightly low. Not...

Anyone ever try hunting with a matchlock?

I've got a matchlock kit on order. I'm hoping to one day take it on a deer or turkey hunt. Just wondering if anyone here has tried hunting with a matchlock? I think it would be a real challenge. I've gotten deer and squirrels with my flintlocks, and it's very exciting. Always wondered how the...

    Matchlock on order...

Just placed an order with the Rifle Shoppe for a matchlock kit today. I had been attempting to talk to someone there for several weeks but could not get a person to pick up the phone. I did read they were in the process of moving to a new faculty so I figured I'd give them a few weeks. A nice...

More pictures of my finished loading block for .32 cal.

Here are a couple pictures of my completed loading block for my .32 caliber squirrel rifle. I attached it to the strap of my powder horn with a long enough lanyard to be able to place it on the muzzle without having to stretch things. The patches I'm using are actually for a .45-50 caliber rifle...

    Dont throw that wood away.

Just got done making this loading block for my squirrel gun. I used leftover wood that was in one of the boxes that my last stock was sent in. They usually line the boxes with straps of scrap maple and other good hard wood. I always keep that wood for projects like this. Just thought I'd share.

Does anyone produce a matchlock kit?

Are there any companies producing decent matchlock kits, or even parts? Id love to own a fishtail matchlock? I did find one on a site called veteranarms. Com. I know nothing about this site. Do they sell Indian made garbage or are they worth it to buy from?

.31 caliber balls for buckshot load?

I have a .32 caliber squirrel gun. I have a Lee .311 dia mold. I also have a 20 gauge smoothbore flintlock. Was wondering if I could use these same .311 diamter balls in a buckshot charge? I looked at a listing and .311 diamter falls right in between a # 1, and a #0 buckshot. Looks like ten...

First time out with .32 caliber.

Im hooked. I finished this rifle over the winter, just didn't have time to get it to the range. Used 20 grains of 3fg(the smallest charge my measure will throw), 311 ball. Target is a one inch dot at 25 yards. This is actually a 4 shot group. The center hole is actually two holes. I need to file...

Youre favorite time of day to deer hunt?

What time of day do you prefer to hunt deer? For me, Ive had the most luck, and seen the most deer in the last two hours of the day, than any other time. I prefer to hunt until it gets dark over going in before dawn, although opening day its tradition to get in before first light.
