    Pyrodex P

I’d been using Pyrodex P (3F equivalent) in cap-locks since the mid-80s. I had read that in addition to lower pressures, it was also cleaner burning than black. I moved back to Oregon ion 2011. For some reason I just couldn’t get decent groups. I switched to Black powder and accuracy greatly...

This is a 54 caliber Astorian Rifle made by Dan Young and owned by the late Herb Hazen, co-owner of GREEN RIVER FORGE when it was in Springfield, Oregon. This is according to the receipt I have from the Gun Works. There are no makers marks except for DY (Dan Young) inside the lock. The stock...

    NMLRA fighting

I may be the only one but I would like to see a book with a compilation of the Bevel Brothers articles. They are the "Myth Busters" of the Muzzle Loading world! Walt

    NMLRA fighting

There are two parts to the NRA. The first involves education, promoting gun safety and preserving our Hunting Heritage. The second is a political action group called NRA-ILA who works on gun laws. Many confuse the second with the first. Thanks! Walt

    NMLRA fighting

I’ve been a member for quite a while now. Started in the 80s. I’ve belonged to several gun clubs. You never know the politics that goes on until you go to a meeting. My local one isn’t bad and everyone seems to get along. While President of a ML club south of me, I was obliged to attend the...

    NMLRA fighting

Looks like you need to suggest a By-Law change. As far as I know, any member unless yours prohibits that. If you do, you need to get a bunch of folks to attend that meeting and make sure the change happens. Walt

    Ballistol

I read somewhere that they changed their formula. The bottle doesn't even say NAPA anymore. That's why I went with Ballistol. https://www.napaonline.com/en/p/SL_SL2512?impressionRank=2

I have a 36 caliber CVA Navy that was made by Armi San Marcos. As mentioned above, they take a nipple particular to that manufacturer. Hope this helps! Nice Rig!!!!!! Walt

    Ballistol

The system I is dependent upon swabbing between shots to keep the barrel condition the same for each one. Also important is the thinkness of the pattches must be the same to, again keep the bore uniform. Walt

    Ballistol

There is a Dry Patch System that’s been out for decades. One of the problems with Target Shooting with a Muzzle Loader is having the same amount of lube on every patch. Too much and it shoots high. Too little and it hits low. Remember, any variance in the loading process affects accuracy. You...

    Triple 7 ignition problems

I had experimented with Triple Seven in a side-lock years ago. I switched to the Mountain State Muzzle Loading "Spitfire Magnum" nipple and all my ignition problems, disappeared. I use Remington caps which they claim are 40% hotter (compared to what, I don't know). They're similar to the CCI...

    T/C rifle barrels labeling

I don't believe I've ever seen a muzzle Loader that did not have that warning. However, I have seen guns without the "Please read Instructions before use". I've been told that Invest Arms copied T/C's Hawken, especially the Coil Main Spring Lock used on other models, such as Lyman's Great...

    T/C rifle barrels labeling

I had been told that only affected the Patriot Pistol. Side-locks were still being manufactured until 2007, then discontinued. This happened after Smith and Wesson purchased the company.

    Whitworth rifle range report

Very Nice! I didn't know that anyone had replicated them. A Google search found some old auctions of originals. One went for over $8000US. It came with everything Brockway provided. Thanks! Walt

I think I'm going to acquire the correct bullet (500 grains hopefully) or a mold before making any kind of adjustments. Walt

    Whitworth rifle range report

Old Roof Flashing should be fine! BTW, some of the, old timers (1840s and up) used a two-piece bullet which was swaged together. The base was pure lead with the front half being somewhat harder. Walt
