T/c Hawken with 1/66 round ball barrel loads

1/66 is not a normal TC twist. If it has 1/66 twist, you can use just about any powder charge in it. 100 grns GOEX is great for deer hunting. 60 for targets at up to 50 yds.

Reamer Made to Correct a Cannon Bore

So you need to remove 0.010 in diameter...gonna be major work to do so with the nice reamer pictured. Lots of horsepower required! And you will need some guide. or did you say your bore has two diameters? Is the larger bore at the front? How far back to the step? i.e. how much length of the...

I'm very interested, though the muzzle end of the rifle shows troubling damage. How might we establish direct communication, please?

    Is my bore ruined?

Some of us must of had too much whisky when they wrote much/most of the crap posted in this thread. I wouldn't have removed the ball in this way, but I also know there's no issue with having done so. BP gunbarrel steel is low alloy/low strength. Temperatures shown (by color) will not harm the...

What is about a Hawken Rifle

I began my search for a good half-stock percussion rifle in late 1973. Read what I could find. Decided on the TC "Hawken" kit. Found The Longrifle Shop in Richardson TX. On entering the shop, I saw a few authentic Hawken rifles on the wall. I knew I'd found what I didn't know I was looking for...

What is about a Hawken Rifle

ALL THE MORE-OR-LESS AUTHENTIC HAWKEN STYLE RIFLES MENTIONED ARE PRETTY GOOD, THOUGH A BIT SHY OF TRUE. GET A TRULY AUTHENTIC ONE (HAWKEN SHOPPE IS THE BEST!) IN YOUR HANDS, AND YOU'LL BEGIN TO EXPERIENCE THE NOT-TO-SUBTLE DIFFERENCES. WARMS THE MOUNTAIN MAN'S HEART!

    Hawker nipple issue- help

I always use a sharp angled countersink to make a tapered/flared opening from a minimal length flash channel to the main charge. Both in flint and percussion rifles. I also always open up the whole flash path (except for a short length of 1/16 in dia) and polish the whole path to powder. Seems...

    Aging brain tanned elk

COMMERCIAL TANNERIES USE GOLDEN AS DEFAULT. NO IDEA WHY. TRADITIONAL IS EITHER CREAM (AS BRAIN-TANNED), OR SMOKED.

    Tumbling bullets

Lyman GPR made in slow or faster twist. Slow twist requires balls to shoot well. Fast twist shoots bullets.

    Whitworth rifle range report

The Whitworth has a hexagonal bore. The Volunteer has "normal" rifling, perhaps Alexander Henry style. All are good, but a Volunteer is NOT a Whitworth.

    Whitworth rifle range report

You've not mentioned much about your bullets & the alloy you're using. Cast pure lead bullets up to 40:1 lead/tin alloy are "sized" as soon as the powder ignites! The results you show are way less than should be expected. The cheap paper you have tried will NOT hold up to firing. What you've...

    Broken Mortimer stock

I've been repairing broken wrists for years. Often the finer/fancier the wood grain is, the weaker & more prone to breakage it is. IF the wood is all there, that's half the battle. IF it's not been poorly "repaired" already, that's a HUGE plus, but not insurmountable. Preparation is king. Get...
