    Potted Beef

In Elmer Keith's book, "Hell I Was There" Elmer, born in 1900, spoke of the family doing the same thing, both with fried patties and sausage stored in earthen ware crocks, using hot lard to seal it, The sausage was intended for use when outdoor storage wouldn't suffice, in the summer. Hence...

    NO YEAST at the store....

That reminds me of a sourdough starter. Years ago, about 20 actually, my dad got me a batch of sourdough starter that had been made during WWII. I made several loaves and biscuits with it, then went on vacation and managed to kill it. Maybe i should make another, and can say i made it...

I thought i would never find AP Flour, i went to a half a dozen stores looking, finally found 10lbs today. They were also out of yeast... i'll have to get up at crack of dawn and try again.

    Non-toxic garden defense

I know from personal experience an electric fence won't stop most critters... but it'll dang sure get my attention.

    ? Testing the SkyChief load....

I haven't tried the skychief load, but i haven't been afield much lately. Has anyone had issue with the oil effecting the powder charge, like say after loading early in the morning, carrying most of the day, then getting a shot late in the day? Just thinking out loud... It sounds like it's...

    Non-toxic garden defense

When i worked 3rd shift about twice a year my Lt would call me in, hand me a couple boxes of CB Longs and say "Animal Control Is getting lots of skunk/varmint calls. Be careful and I don't wanna know." A few days later Animal control started getting calls of dead critters in alleyways and in...

    Where to get lead

In the north Texas area the lead was stripped from telephone lines years ago, i know a guy who retired from there and he has a mountain of it in his shed, but won't part with any. Says he's waiting for it to hit $10/Lb. And has over a ton. He said when they was stripping it the large square...

I shot the big barr just not with my smoke pole

My grandpa raised trophy winning Plott hounds, he was a diehard coon hunter. We would go hunting 3-5 nights a week, g'pa liked to hunt the river, dad preferred casting a Plott bitch named Brazos River Honey on the dirt road and let her strike. She had a hot nose and when she struck the...

    A question of filling horns

I guess i'm lucky... most of my powder horns have the spout end large and round enough to insert it into the powder can and invert, letting the powder flow into the horn. This is with the older metal Goex cans, won't work with the new plastic cans.

    Where to get lead

Make friends with local plumbers and roofers. They both have scrap lead they usually throw away. It's amazing what a 6 pack will do towards getting scrap lead. I have cast lead to wheel weights 50/50 for prb to shoot thru my rifles, but minie balls and conicals must be dead soft.

who all uses peeps on their percussion guns.

Im a HUGE FAN of aperture sights, I have them on several cartridge arms, and installed a home made one on my Navy Arms Musketoon.

who all uses peeps on their percussion guns.

IIRC, in one of my many books on Classic Firearms there's a photo of a Teutonic Wheelock with an aperture sight. So they certainly EXISTED in the time of Jim Bridger, but was probably an after market or custom item.

A great friend and part of my heart

I don't find it AT ALL inappropriate... nothing can steal its way into your heart like a dog. Mine was named Fletcher, a Jack Russell Terrier who was a Terror at times but was the greatest dog I'll ever have. He would tree squirrels, defend his territory like a lion. No one ever told him he...
