    This'll make you feel old!

Well, you missed him constantly carrying a capped muzzleloader muzzle forward with his hand over the muzzle with the hammer down on the cap. Eventually, on camera, it snagged on brush and blew some of his fingers off. But, all that said, it was kind of a breakthrough series to show...

Here is What I Love About Muzzleloading

I always figured if I can't pee off the back deck, I don't want to live there! 🙂 I can shoot up to 125 yards on my own range, but also have a membership on a DNR range about 15 miles away. I only go there during weekday mornings. I made the mistake of going in the late afternoon or weekend a...

    Thoughts on wet weather

Agree! In the last 15 years I've basically quit using anything but wool in cold weather hunting. I've added a couple capotes, wool pants, wool bibs, marino wool socks and hats, and several Fred Asbell wool pullovers. WAY better than synthetics, IMO. Well...I wouldn't do that. Dangerous and...

PA Conical vs 54 RB Advice

My experience in both my RMH and Frontier (both .54 with 1-65 twist) was the same with solid based conicals, even with a wad. They tumbled. But with a hollow base, both rifles were deadly with the Buffalo Ballet or the Hornady GP and no wad. Not a lot of chioce anymore in a .54 hollow base...

    This'll make you feel old!

Several years ago on one of the Sportsman channels, there was a show that ran several years called "Sasquatch - Mountain Man." Looks like it still might be viewable on Pluto TV. He hunted with bow and traditional muzzleloader.

    New Muzzleloader Recommendations

Can you build a kit? Are you willing to pay for a custom build? Or are you only looking at production guns? Budget? If a .62 smooth Hawken is your perfect answer, contact the Hawken Shop and talk to them to see what the possibilities are. http://www.thehawkenshop.com/ I have an "Early...

PA Conical vs 54 RB Advice

Chuck beat me to it. The .54 Minie should be a good conical option. I shot .54 Hornady GPs out of my 1-65 twist Rocky Mountain Hawken. Those are not made anymore, but that Minie is very close to them.

    Great Plains 54 accuracy

My first thought as well...the bullets, as cast, aren't large enough in diameter.

Idiotic Store Policies are turning me away.

I agree, but for every person like you or me that will cancel and back out, there are a hundred that will go through with the transaction, unfortunately. They can lose our business, and the 1 in 100 others that get ticked off at stupid dishonest fees, and still make far more money. It's a...

Idiotic Store Policies are turning me away.

I used to order frequently from Midway USA as well. I just don't find them competitive anymore. Never saw those odd charges, but it has been quite some time since I've ordered from them. I've many times emptied carts when surprise charges show up at online vendors. Other than realistic...

    2024/2025 Squirrel Hunting Thread...........

It's common in my area for squirrels to be out in very cold weather (single digits +/- zero F) not long after daylight...if it is calm. If it's windy or a strong breeze, then not. I find that wind is more of a deterrent than temp.

    Thoughts on wet weather

While I have hunted in rain, snow, and sleet conditions when the weatherman misses the forecast and I get caught, I tend to avoid it. My fear is that in hunting, nothing is 100% certain. No matter how careful we are, that unseen twig a few feet in front of that big game animal can divert the...

Peep on my Kibler Southern Mtn

Looks like a TC. If so, no longer made, but you can find used ones for a hefty price. I have one on my Rocky Mountain Hawken. They are a very nice peep.

    Is Swiss Powder any good?

https://www.atf.gov/explosives/qa/may-i-sell-black-powder-without-license May I sell black powder without a license? No. Anyone who engages in the business of selling black powder, regardless of quantity, must be licensed as an explosives dealer. [27 CFR 555.41(b)]

    Is Swiss Powder any good?

I burned a lot of T7 in my Pedersoli Rocky Mountain Hawken. It is definitely a "hot" powder. With 90 grs of 2f and a .530 PRB, I was getting over 1900 fps, which was around 300 fps more than black, which seems to match your results for long guns. I have gone all black now just to lessen types...

    Son got his first one

Congratulations to you both! 👍 Your son has some incredible composure under pressure to have to hammer back four times and still execute that good of a shot! A lot of experienced hunters would fall apart in that situation. Good for him! Hopefully you guys can get a new nipple installed to...

Peep on my Kibler Southern Mtn

I also had one mounted on a Jaeger I built from Track's kit. That gun had a Rice 31" swamped barrel and I didn't have to have a tall sight at all. As you said, it depends on the barrel profile as to just how high the front sight will need to be. When I have time, I might alter another...

    Choosing a brand of powder

There is another difference in Swiss, in my experience, and that is less fouling. A friend of mine exclusively uses Swiss and if we were cleaning guns after a day of shooting, his guns had considerably less fouling requiring fewer patches. But, I agree that for all practical purposes, all of...
