This is a proud tradition still alive in the U.S. military. I remember reading an interview with a Soviet General after the cold war in which he said it was very difficult to plan to fight the U.S. because they felt no obligation to follow their own doctrine and didn't read their manuals.

Sounds like a lot of bother over what a future owner may or may not do with a rifle they own.

I suppose one could improve on a simple lever, but all you have then is a complicated lever.

I doubt you are going to see anything proven. My advice is just be happy the gun went off, unless you have so few problems in life that you have to go looking for them. I chalk it up to voodoo myself, and I live the most carefree existance of anyone I know.

I have no idea what is historically accurate, but I can tell you for certain that if the rangers of yore were anything like their successors of the early to mid 2000's, cutting a few inches off some musket barrels was the last thing anyone in command would be concerned about them doing.

I look at some of these guns you guys do and wish I had even a modicum of artistic ability.

That is what I did. I stopped when I got to the trigger and made sure the hole where I wanted it, then finished drilling.

The trigger plate needs to go in first. I drilled mine through the stock because I didn't see much of hitting a predrilled hole.

You're taking a chance anytime you let someone else do it, no matter how much you pay. The only way to be 100% sure is to do it yourself.

My .62 trade gun will group 4" or a little less consistently at 75 yards with 85 gr of 2F off a bench, but is absolutely wild at 100, so my hunting limit is somewhere around 50-60 yards. The two deer I've killed with that gun were about 30 yard shots.
