Seeds shot? Anything used HC. PC

Yes, gravel, sand etc. another thought is rock salt, coarse salt and or seasoning spices. Thus they are pre-seasoned after getting shot.

    What is that guy doing?

I would say the fellow likely has his hand and fingers off to the side a little. Thus setting off the charge safely. You don’t want to mess with the shooters aiming by obstructing it. But putting a pinch of powder over the flash hole is reasonable too. Then set it off on command. But like you...

Should I or should I not?

If you are a collector investing in collectibles then by all means keep it pristine for 30-40 years when it might go up in value. Otherwise it is meant to be used and fired. Then go shoot it and enjoy it.

Interesting Cap & Ball Paper Cartridge Information

There were a lot of scandals back during and after the civil war where manufacturers reduced powder charges and bullet weight to increase profits. Some of the old surviving newspaper articles and court case documents were interesting. The government specifications had listed the bullet weights...

Why did odd stocks die out?

I agree it was the styles and fashions that change over time.

    Help with a derringer

If I had that little gun I would look to see if a model airplane propeller reamer would come close to fitting in the barrel. If the blades are too thick then carefully grind them down to fit the barrel slots. You can cut the smaller size steps off as desired too. The old Fox manufacturing prop...

    .36 Colt Navy that powerful??????

The .38 S&W Special first came out in 1898. It was at first loaded with black powder. The longer cartridge case allowed it to hold 3 grains more powder than the .38 Long Colt. Thus giving it about 100 to 150 fps over the .38 Colt round. It has been said that the government requested a more...

    .36 Colt Navy that powerful??????

The Army had chose to use a Colt revolver using .38 Colt cartridges. This was not the same as a .38 Special or .38S&W cartridges. But there was a lot of behind the scenes political things going on. The Army ranks wanted something that was like the .45 Colt cartridges. They wanted to be able to...

    Flintlock howdah?!

Nice. 20 guage too. You can stuff a big bullet down the barrels or use buck shot or bird shot if you want to. I like it. They made double barrel pistols almost as soon as the first single shot pistols were being made way back then. So yes flintlock doubles were legit from way back then.

    round skip from howitzer

Yes the solid shot could be reused if found. Those were made from fairly hard cast iron. If it didn’t shatter hitting something you could reuse it.

    Estate sale pistol

I agree that is really neat. It is possible it might have been a flintlock that was converted to percussion too. That was a common thing that was done way back then too. But probably not as I don’t see any residual left over flintlock features.

    chamber sealant

Yes I also use beeswax as a base with something like Crisco or lard. Maybe more messy but it helps keep the crud softer and easier to wipe off. I bring along a few extra rags to wipe off the gun with between firings.

    You call that a rifle.

The 4 bore rifles were the elephant guns in the black powder muzzleloader era. There were some two bore monster guns made too. But the recoil off of these big 2,4,6 bore guns was very abusive to the shooter. I would bet many a shooter hit concussions and injured shoulders firing them. Many were...

    Poor man’s guns

I remember in the 1960s that you became the laughing stock and brunt of jokes if you showed up with a muzzleloader for the hunting trip. But I bagged my deer though. So no surprise if a person thought making their ML look more modern might lead to less embarrassment. But a shorter carbine like...

    In hot water?

I use hot tap water too. But it cools off fast though. So just using regular room temp water is fine. If you clean your barrel at the range then I doubt it is hot water.

    Poor man’s guns

I figured that a “poor man’s gun” was a military surplus item sold to the public at fire sale prices. But before then simple trade guns were likely bought by the poor too especially the more useful smoothbore guns as rifles were very expensive back then. That really took off after the Civil war...

Are The Italian Black Powder Manufacturers Going to Go out Of Business?

It does seem to look more and more like so. If we go into a recession or depression the market will dry up fast. Plus if inflation continues no one will be able to afford them anymore or have disposable income to buy any.

    Who carries a purse?

Braid a strap using parachute cord. It’s all the rage at the gun shows where everyone seemingly has bracelets, key cords, etc made with braided parachute cords. Then you have a 1,000 feet plus of unbraided cord for emergencies if needed.

    Who carries a purse?

I learned something new today. New names for the man bags. People are now using crossbody bags, unisex bags, unisex crossbody bags, and so on. But I still like “possibles” bag myself. But that is a muzzleloader kind of thing.
