Question about what to load in a smoothbore.

Hi Steven, I would also like to say welcome to the tradition of hunting! Pay special attention to the regs as they explain most of the hunting rules and seasons. Spend some time learning about the game animals you want to pursue. Focus on one species at a time untill you learn there habits...

Question about what to load in a smoothbore.

Hello Steven, Lead shot doesn’t make game birds toxic to eat. People use lead shot for all sorts of hunting. And most game is taken with lead (or plated lead). Migratory waterfowl (think ducks and geese) are regulated by the federal government and they require you use non toxic shot to...

Fixing up an old 10 Gauge SxS

Thanks for everyone’s replies! There is definitely some chipping damage to the sear nose that I believe is caused by the main spring being much stronger than the original. I was at a loss for how to fix this without complex welding to build up material. Thank you for bringing up more options as...

    Hornet Nest Wadding

Hi everyone, I have heard of lots of you using bald face hornet nests for shotgun wadding. How do you harvest the nests? To use them for historically correct wadding?

Need help....Have a cva hawken rifle with ball stuck in it,,,

I’ve used both a ball puller and grease gun. Ball puller is my first choice. If you won’t want to wait for a ball puller to ship then you can find the parts you need for the grease gun method at the local hardware store or tractor supply. It’s super easy and less messy than you would expect...

    Black Squirrels

Marysville KS is where I saw my first black squirrel. I believe they are melanistic fox squirrels. I used to work at a landscape company that did some jobs up that way. Those black squirrels were jumping around some of the yards I was working in. As hunters I think we are observers of nature...

    Black Squirrels

Wow! That “whitetail” is an interesting color morph. I wonder how those lighter morphs fair with avian predators.

    Black Squirrels

Those black Abert’s are very interesting looking. I hunt in CO for elk in the fall (started when I lived in a neighboring state). I’ll have to keep an eye out just to see one would be interesting. It seems I spend most of my time out ek hunting looking at birds , squirrels, and marmots and not...

    Black Squirrels

Very interesting, some of you are mentioning other color phases and how you almost have one of each from your states. I have heard of white and black color phases. Are there other color phases that are semi-common that you guys have seen in the field? -10Ga

    Black Squirrels

These were black color phase grey squirrels. Found several in a walnut river bottom in Georgia. I have also seen black color phase fox squirrels in Marrysville Kansas. They are known in the area as a novelty attraction. Good to know how common they are. I will probably try to harvest one and...

    Black Squirrels

While I was out deer hunting today I ran into some black color morph squirrels. I’ve seen these once or twice before and I was wondering how common these are? I wasn’t able to bag one today but I hope to in the future. How rare is the group I found today? -10 Ga

    Remember your First ML kill?

My first ML kill was a white tail buck killed on public land in Kansas. Me and my brother both had tags but I was going to wait for firearms season. My brother had a new cap lock 54cal muzzleloader that he had zeroed and practiced with. We both went out during muzzleloader season and I was just...

    1830-1845 Prairie Powder Horn

Hello all, I am looking for an example (or examples) of powder horns from the 1830-1845 timeframe specifically from the great plains region. Examples both from Native Americans and European Americans are welcome. I am also interested in the historically accurate kit for feeding a muzzle loader...

How far must you travel to hunt?

Although not ideal I live 45min from a large national forest that is my hunting grounds. Its a big change from my youth where I lived on the hunting grounds (private property) like some others. I have traveled up to 12 hours to hunt but that is not my normal commute. 10 Ga.

Fixing up an old 10 Gauge SxS

Thanks for the reply Phil coffins, The dent does occur within 3” of the muzzle. It would be possible to cut and recrown the muzzle. I just would hate to do that to an older piece. If one barrel is not shootable though it is a lot of extra dead weight to carry on a hunt. I thought the same about...

Fixing up an old 10 Gauge SxS

Thank you for the reply Ohio ramrod! I have used a similar method before on fluid steel barrels in modern shotguns. The issue I have is not being able to pass the slugs through the breach. I’m not sure how easy it will be to remove these antique breach plugs. I have not heard of the “slide...
