Just finished my latest: Carving leather, overlaid with oil tanned leather with spots. Carving is old-style, swivel knife only. I still need to add a retainer thong on it. Pictures are not the greatest

I only have one revolver, 1851 Navy, so all the holsters I have made are for it. I included my Bowie knife and sheath in preparation for taking off to the Alamo with my menagerie. :rotf: I am seriously going to have to find a home for all these things. :idunno:

Sweet lookin stuff there Deano. I've got to spend some time with the swivel knife, it really dresses them up.

Your collection looks good!...I have always heard that those retainer thongs are a Hollywood thing started in the silent westerns and were not on original holsters before 1900! .. That's what an article from SASS mentioned years ago, when it got started.

Just wondering?

Richard,
Using a swivel knife is easier than you think!...I recommend the porcelain ceramic bladed one. I have one and used for a lot of years and never had to sharpen it and glides through leather! ... Pricey, but worth it!

+1 on that! Strictly a B movie thing. I would never add a hammer retaining thong either. As deep as a slim jim is and with the way the revolver fits they aren't needed except when you participate in the obligitory bar fight scene.

I can actually use the knife pretty well Rick, my problem is with the design I guess. Just not artistic enough to sit here and draw out a design that looks half way decent on a holster to cut. :idunno:

I hate it when someone requests one on theirs. It's not needed on the holsters I make.

Whatever, but when I want the gun secured, I want it secured. In FL, one can transport a loaded handgun anywhere in the vehicle as long as it is secured, except on your person. In a hoster, secured by a snap down safety strap, or the equivalent, passes this requirement. I have no problem with hammer thongs on my holsters. In fact, I demand them. To each, his own.

I take all the criticism as positive. The leg thong was there on the one holster because it was made totally with oil tanned leather and had a tendency to grip the revolver.

I am still way down on the learning curve (recognizing that Swampy is the comparison for quality) and have some variance in the holster tightness. That drove the decision to put on the retainer thong.

I like to try different ways to make a holster and I will keep that up, recognizing they won't always come out perfect. In my opinion, western movie holsters are a part of the holster making history and that only making those that are historically correct is restrictive. For the short time I have been making holsters, I am pretty satisfied with my progress. I will continue to improve on my quality.
 :v

Just an added postscript, after the holster has settled down, dried completely, etc.... I don't have a need for the hammer thong. The fit is great!

BTW, thanks Wick for the info on why/when the hammer thong is needed.
:hatsoff:

I really like that overlay with the minimal stud accenting.I have some old leather tools I "inherited" and the swivel knives are not easy to work with. I think I will pop for the ceramic model mentioned.
