Did any of you see the show on nat.geografic last night? They made a conning tower of cast iron and made the glass porthole flange of wrought iron. They shot with a 58 cal musket,a 6 shot pistol,a shotgun they know was fired at the sub.4 shots coming in toward the ship and the rifle fired as it was going away.He shot at the bluish light through the small glass. The 58 shattered the flange to pieces and took a small chunk out of the tower metal.squib

Yeah, I saw that show and was wondering if anybody from here was watching it as well.

Although duplicating something that occurred 150 years ago is just about impossible, I thought the tests brought credibility to the idea that the Hunley sunk because of a .58 picking off the outer flange and glass port.

Whether it was marksmanship or luck is a whole other issue!

Well it was dark and with that glass glowing blue it should not be to hard to hit. They used a foundry that was active at that time. Its a small foundry in tenn.squib
