Black Powder- should I be mad?

have you looked at auction arms or gunboker? a lot on there require the muzzleloader be sent to a ffl.

Your story should be noted by the new comers to black powder.

Asking a clerk for black powder will often get a blank stare in return.

When that happens, ask to see the manger or owner of the store.

Because real black powder has to be locked up a lot of the regular clerks don't even know the store sells it. It's not really their fault because few people ever ask for it.

Speaking of this, if you folks find a local store that does carry real black powder be sure to go there often and make them aware that your grateful for the them going to the trouble of carrying it.
The store owner is going to extra effort and he deserves all the praise you can give him.

I've been trying to do this for a while, but I can't find a local who carries it. I guess I'll look around to see if anyone carries black powder at the gun show this weekend. I bet that I will get the same confusion when I ask.

Now THAT brings back some memories - ALL good. I must have been about twelve years old when I made my first arrows - not broadheads, just FT piled - using a dozen Port Orford cedar shafts I had saved up to buy.

I recall wondering where and why - now, of course, many years later, I know where and why - about a tenth of my life is spent in that beautiful place.

I know what u mean.Its very hard to find anyone around locally that sells the real thing,only substitute bp can be found.I remember when I could go to wally world and get it from a knowledgeable sales person. Now its some kid behind the counter w/ a bunch of stuff that looks like fishing lures stuck in thier face that doesnt know ANYTHING about guns.While I'm on my rant I am saddened by the folks that I have m.l. hunted w/ in the past that have all gone high tech scoped stainless in line,and telling me that I am goofy for hanging onto my old side locks.Same folks that had no problem taking game w/ traditional front stuffers in years past.

Unless your going to the gun show to look for guns and such I would say save your money.

All of the gun shows I've ever gone to won't allow the vendors to sell explosives, which includes black powder.

I believe...the regulations that the stores have to follow (in N.Y. fer sure) are one big reason they do not carry real powder,,,also believe the fact its so hard to get now..most people won't play traditional ml..powder hard to get,,flints? caps $$$ and round balls!!,,now,,in a store! $$$$ holy smoke!
(that said,,I really have no clue what it costs to shoot one of them other modern type things..but, I do know its easier to get, )

I have been to Cabelas 4 times and never saw anything I needed or really wanted. We have a new gun shop that opened a week or two ago, so I stopped in to look around. Guy behind the counter, looked to be about 20, asked if he could help. (Everything on the racks and walls was black with plastic stocks and big clips.) I said I guess not, I don't shoot anything that takes brass tampons. An old guy in the corner coughed his coffee all over the counter and burst out laughing. He said see, there are people who want muzzle loader gear and you don't have any. The owner, a 50 ish heavy set guy wearing BDU's with a rebel flag sewn to the shoulder came out of the back, even had a bayonet in a sheath on his web belt. He said I was the third person in two days to want black powder items. He asked for a list of things, I would buy, if he stocked them. Gotta give him credit for that.

Some of the ones I've been to do allow it, but yeah, I'm hunting for guns mainly. Blackpowder would just be a convenience.

That's the funny thing. I have to mail order just about everything if I don't plan well and pick stuff up at Friendship, IN. However, Its still cheaper to shoot my .58 than anything other than a .22 rimfire.

I agree, its takes some planning but real BP, flint, patches and lead is a lot cheaper than modern magnum CF ammo.

I went to Bass Pro in Indiana and they had just about no ML supplies. Gander Mtn about five miles away was only marginally better.

However, Bass Pro north of the city in IL had the most extensive ML supply collection I have experienced. It actually had on the shelf 12 gauge wads for shotguns, which I could not find anywhere else at retail. So I guess the stores vary.

Go figure.
