Here is a CVA SXS kit that my brother got from his EX in 1983. It was just sitting there in its box so I told him to send it to me. I did not tell him I was going to finish it and give it back to him for his birthday but now its done and on its way back to him so he can finally use it.

Nice job on finishing that double; and I'm sure your brother will be nicely surprised. I had purchased one of those kits back in the early 80s but never put it together. There were some issues, IIRC, involving inletting and fit, so I sold it. Now I wish I had kept it...isn't that always the way, especially at the price back then?

I had to do a good bit of filing and fitting to get the locks to fit in place under the tang. Also, the inlet for the tang was wayyy deep and the inlet for the escuteons??? on the pin were impossibly deep I had to make a sawdust/glue paste and fill in the inlet some to keep from having to remove a bunch of wood from the forstock.

When I built my CVA kit, I had to add a recoil pad to extend the stock long enough for a close LOP for me. I didn't like having to use a modern recoil pad on the gun, but I didn't want to try to fit a wood extension to the stock, as I had nothing that would come close to the grain on the wood(?) used in the stock.

My plan is to fill in the missing wood spots in the barrel mortise, and send or take it to Dick Greensides at Pecatonica River, Rockford, Il., to have him use it as a pattern to make a new stock from Maple or Walnut, and put a more traditional steel buttplate on the stock. I am not thrilled with the wire springs in the action, but the gun has shot well over the past 20 years I have had it.

I think he will like it also. By the way I did not have to inlet nothing -- everything fit fine except where the hammers were hitting the stock above the locks. I was not crazy about the locks - cheaply made - but they worked. I did make a steel butt plate for it.

Paul,
Back in the eighties I had a factory finished one. It was way too short. So I just slipped on a rubber boot type recoil pad on it. I wasn't concerned with looks because the fit and finish left a lot to be desired anyway. The boot surprisingly put my eye to where the poi was real good instead of low without it.

I think you did a great job. Your brother is blessed to have a brother like you. :hatsoff:

Beautiful job and your brother is a lucky guy. I hope he gets a chance to use it. Mine is an old factory made version and it has been wonderfully accurate on the trap range (considering it's me pulling the trigger)and in the field for upland birds.

Thanks Bull -- question, I would like to use mine on the trap range but the ranges here do not allow muzzloaders on the range. Do you shoot from a out of the way field with one of those hand throwers - or do you have a private trap range you use. I guess if you use a private trap range you are standing closer to the house than the 16 yard line - is that correct  :idunno: ?

My wife and I are members at a private gun club. There is no problem with using muzzleloaders but I only do so on an unoccupied field. It's not fair to others with regular guns to make them wait through the slow reloading process. I don't compete at trap, it's just for fun. Since the CVA is cylinder bore, I do stand at the closest stations.

I would try the CVA SxS at skeet (same rule, an unoccupied range) but I stink on ice at skeet. just not fast enough on those side to side targets.
