"That reply was to Mike2005 because he wanted to pick many guns instead of one."

Eb: Regardless, that qualification renders the poll more specific. You are assuming that the original stipulation "You can have only one" is to be understood as "if you could own only one". That is not the case. Coupled as it was with "favorite", it can also mean that we can pick only one gun as a favorite. though we might want to pick a variety depending on use. Ya see? (This isn't real important in the whole scheme of things, I know, but proper use of language is important to me. That's the only reason that I'm picking this point.) If I could only have one, it'd be a .62 smoothbore.

Put whatever restrictions on it as you wish but the fact is you may only have one flintlock. Be that a duck gun or a deer gun or a paper puncher, you must pick only one. If it is your favorite or your most practical that is your choice.

Actually this is not a "poll" as the results are not going to be tallied. This is just a chance for anyone to show off their choice as what they like best.

I can not understand the difficulty of some understanding your post. I have (or have had) a few rifles and like them all, but there will always be one I favor over the others because of the fit, how well it shoots, etc., etc. ,etc.

I chose my .62 Hawkens full stock because of the 1" ATF H&H barrel and its superb accuracy, well balance, the wider early Hawkens butt plate to absorb more recoil, the 3/4 lb of lead I added to help counter balance it, and just plain nice fit to my shoulder. Another reason is that it is not so ornate that I am afraid to get a ding or to on it. I also like the sub sonic boom it makes instead of a crack! All the others just come in a close second or third. They are more ornate and good shooters too.

I never had a problem of the "just one rifle" syndrome. I knew what you meant from your original post. IMO. (To each his/her own).

Homebuilt .50 caliber Lancaster w/ Siler lock and 44" Getz barrel.

50 grains of powder, .490 ball, whatever patching I am experimenting with (still working up a load)

water, cold, maybe some dish detergent in it

Anyplace and anywhere I can, which is not often.

This was my first flintlock. A 54 calibre Virginia style made by Mike Miller of Paducah, KY. She is probably still my favorite. Got a 44" swamped Rice barrel that Mike coned. DST's. Very accurate. I've killed a bunch of deer with it. It loves 80 grs. FFFG Goex, bear oli patch and a home cast .530" ball with FFF in the pan.

OK I'm on a posting roll. This is my little 40 calibre North Carolina squirrel gunne. If you haven't figured it out by now both Mike and I have a weakness for southern gunnes. It also wears a 44" swamped Rice barrel, again coned. It has every bell and whistle on it that Mike could come up with. It shoots best with 35 grs. FFFG Swiss, bear oil patch .020" thick, a home cast 390 ball and FFF in the pan. When I do my part its rough on the squirrel population. It's pretty light. Its way up on my list of favorites.

This is my 54 calibre South Carolina that Mike finished for me this past summer. It wears a 46" Rice swamped barrel that Mike coned. It has a 14" LOP and fits me the best of all my firelocks. The single trigger is excellent. It shoots better than I can hold and likes the same load as does my Virginia. I love the wood box on it. Something about it just begs to be on a hard wood ridge watching a deer trail.

The title "Your Favorite (poll)" was not mine. It was altered by unknow intervention.

The term "poll" suggests the results will be totaled or tallied. Your replies will not. Just think of the wealth of information that 'new to flintlocks' people can get from this single thread. Come on give us your story.

My current favorite:

Rifle-TC Renegade flinter with a .58 GM barrel.
Load-.575 RB, 70gr FFFg, .015 patch
Cleaning-warm/hot water and soap
Place-Right here will do.

My favorite flintlock and number one all around favorite rifle is my T-C Hawken "hybrid". It has the old style stock that had the high comb. I lowered the comb toward the front so the gun wouldn't pound my cheek bone when I touched her off. I added a GM barrel and an L&R lock. I rounded off the top of the butt plate to make it easier to shoulder. Finally I put on a set of fixed sights that I made although I used a T-C primitive rear sight base to hold my rear sight and to utilize the existing holes in the barrel. She's a deerslayer for sure. If I was only allowed one gun, it would be this one.
I load my rifle with a .495 roundball with a .020 ox-yoke pre-cut patch lubed with bore butter. The charge is 100 gr. Goex ffg and the priming is 4fg.
I clean it with extremely hot soapy water then dry it with patches. After it is dry I lube it with bore butter.
My favorite place to hunt is right here in N.E. Pa. either in the many state game lands and forests near my home or at my hunting camp in Pike county.
Good Shooting and Best Regards,,,,,Fuzzy Sites

My favorite flintlock, my first and only, .54 lefty Lyman Deerstalker.

Working on a load, leaning hard to light charge and accurate PRB.

Best place is home, Alberta, Canada. Prefer the bush to mountains or plains. Real nice to have so many options a short drive from home!
