I'm sure that someone out there has tried this. Will the Lee REAL 45 cal bullet work in a Ruger Old Army?

I would think the tapering of the engraving band might cause problems during ramming.

Billy Fugette, who had Clements make up a 50 caliber old army for him, has shot quite a few normally chambered ones as well. One of his favorite bullets is the REAL. If Billy says it's good, its a sure thing.

The whole idea behind the REAL is to engrave the driving bands in to the rifling at loading. IMHO, when loading the REAL into the chamber of a ROA, the first band will be loose, and the second, third, and fourth will be sheared off as rings when loading the cylinder. The same shearing that takes place when loading .457 or .460 round balls. This would lose the real effectiveness of having four driving band engaging the rifling. The ROA was designed for RB and it works great.

Yup - REAL = Rifling Engraved At Loading is what it says on the box, implying that it works best when first pushed down the bore...

I'd stick to the RB or the dedicated .457" conical.

But hey, I've only been shooting mine since 1985, so maybe I've got it wrong.

Yes I have used the .45 REAL in my ROA, actually there are 3 'driving bands' around the circumfrence of the slug. they shoot very good, as do the Lee conicals (have that one also) BP revolvers are my favorite BP shooting.
should be as pure lead as you can find for the slug.

Have not tried the REAL bullets in my ROA but I remember reading someplace many years ago about using conical and loading them backwards to use as wad cutters. Might have to try it someday.

the REAL slug is a TC sort of wadcutter design as cast with a shoulder. I suppose it could be reversed to load the flat base but difficult due to the design of the slug which is a slight taper to allow the base band to slip into the muzzle then the 2nd band a press fit and top band has to be short started. they do great in my ROA, I haven't shoot a heck of a lot of 'em but so far good results and maybe better than the Lee conical.
