I came across the schedule for the Dixon's gunmakers' fair at the end of July. It is a 14-hour drive, so I was wondering if someone who had been to a previous fair could recommend it.

Personal experiences and feedback, appreciated and PM me if you wish.

For others, I have posted the link to the fair. The seminars look good.

It's one of the pinnacle event's for any builder. If you go once, you'll keep going back. All the top builders, and a lot of the top suppliers. So much stuff at this candy store of gunbuilding, that you'll go into Diabetic builders shock. :rotf:

GO and take a camera, a notebook, a pencil pen anything and everything. make a weekend out of it.just make sure you rest your mind before you go. there is a lot to see, do, and talk to people about. i have been going for over 10yrs now and i can't wait to get there every year.

I've been going for 15 years now. My building skill took off expotenially after the first visit. Bring your camera!!! They've been charging a small parking fee of about $2-$4 for the past 5 years or so to pay the owner of the fields. Other than that it's a great weekend. You WILL enjoy yourself. But I have to warn you... This trade/hobby has really taken off and it does get crowded. ...Geo.

Guys, I have put in for annual leave for the period, so I am nearly committed. Are there any recommendations for hotels (nearby, reasonable price) -- I am a wuss and would prefer A/C, cold box, and shower.

I know that folks from Chambers and Pecatonic are going to be there -- do they usually have finished examples of their kits? I am still stuck over a Chambers Marshall and a Pecatonic Tulle.

When I get a new calendar the Gunmaker's Fair weekend is the first thing I circle so I can schedule around it. I have been attending for many years and always come away with something new and worthwhile. If you are truly interested in Muzzleloading and historic trades you will be delighted in the experience. This will be the sixth year I have worked as a volunteer helper registering entrys in the accoutrements competition. Of course I have a distance advantage over most, living just fifty odd miles from the shop. Stop in the garage and say hello. Oh, and did I forget to mention the fact that I am a Homebrew tester of some reknown? See you at the Fair.

Check the website under accomodations for local lodging. It would be a good idea to make reservations early as this draws a lot of folks from far away.

You won't regret the trip to Dixion's. Here is what I can tell you hotels and motels, there is a Microtel in Hamburg,PA next to Cabela's (10 minutes from Dixion's). There may be some smaller ones around Kutztown,PA. There is a Holiday Inn and other chain hotels in Foglesville, PA (20 minutes from Dixions). If you can't find any there search the Allentown, PA area (30 mintues from Dixion's)

Half of our BP league at a local club that I belong to goes to this every year! Takes us between 1 1/2 to 2 hours to get there.

Lots of STUFF! And Chuck fires the cannon too (uses 1/4 pound of BP!) :shocked2: LOTS OF SMOKE!

Wouldn't want to be anywhere else on that weekend!!

Can't wait! Hope to see many of you from the Forum! Less than 15 minutes away is a 250,000 sq. foot Cabella's with a 100,000 gal fresh water fish tank.

BRING MONEY!

Dave

If you think you need it, and can't find it at the Gunmaker's Fair, you probably don't need it.

Its simply the best!!! There are no words to describe it----Its kindda like seeing the Rocky Mountains for the first time--- :v

My first time was in 1999. I had just finished my first rifle using a Hershal House drawing that came with his video. My son-in-law was the proud new owner and he wanted to show it off at the Fair. We went up and when he saw the rifles in the barn, he told me to enter his in the competition. I went home with Best in Show for novice and 1st place novice. The Fair is a great place to meet the guys you read about and to purchase goodies. I think this was Jim Chambers last competition and meeting him and being congratulated by him was a thrill. Once you go, you'll want to come back every year.

Virginia, thanks for your comment and, may I say for all of us, welcome to the forum.

BTW Where are you from? I am originally from Blacksburg (unfortunately born in Charlottesville to a bunch of Wahoos).

Oh, its worth it. I live 45 minutes away from dixons luckily. I go up every now and again.

Chuck waves Hi to everyone.
