Since everyone knows that June 11 is National Corn on the Cob Day, I decided we should shoot at a piece of corn on the cob for June. Shoot your rifle at 25 yds and pistol at 15 yds. You can shoot offhand or shoot from a rest - just mark your target which way you shot (OH or Rest). 5 shots - 10 pts for hits in the center bull and 5 pts for anywhere else on the cob or husk for a maximum of 50 pts. One half of the ball must be in the scoring ring to count. Please score your own targets and mark your score on the target along with the load data. Pictures of your firearms are always nice!

Shoot as many times as you want but only post your best target. If you shoot with multiple firearms you can post one per firearm used.

This is all for fun so don't be reluctant to post your targets - it's all about friendly competition and the more you compete the better you will get!

Two more days to shoot the May target and then I will post the results.

Have fun and stay safe.

Gary

Shot the new corn cob target this a.m. I scored 25, but think I will try again this month to improve.
If not, I will post this target.
Beautiful day here in the heart land. Warm, sunny.
.45 T/C percussion hawken
.440 rb over 60 grains of 777. Pillow tick patch, bore butter lube.
I tried conicals as well but seemed to shoot the r/b's better.

One question and one hint: Does a hit on the leaves or stem, i.e., the husk, count as well? My hint: I don't hit long, narrow targets mounted horizontally nearly as as well as mounting them vertically (so much more room for "forgiveness"). Ergo, I'm going to mount mine ~vertically and come up with a whole new set of excuses to use when I miss!

Nice job on the June target! Thanks for the heavy outline and white background!

Hello everyone this is my first time doing a postal match and only the third time I shot this gun and the first time with this particular load and I thought this would be good as any to see what it and I can do. I used a .50 cal Lyman Trade Rifle with 65 ffg goex, .490 ball with a .018 patch greased with 5:1 olive oil/beeswax the patches were cut at the muzzle. I’m scoring it 15 points because the fifth shot I pulled on and it’s a 50/50, shot three is just off the page 9 o’clock I wasn’t paying attention to how I was loading and didn’t get enough patch and burned through kicking it 6 inches left.

I debated about posting this or not but there’s a bit of a story with this. The gun was made by my Father back in the late 80s early 90s for his Father, my grandpa and he had it until he passed away in 2003 when I was 6 years old. Not to long after that the gun had changed hands and my uncle bought it. Well my uncle gave it to me last month in exchange of labor and knowing the gun would be in good hands. When I got it, it needed to be cleaned desperately I remember my uncle said he let my cousin use it and shot it then left it loaded and that’s been many years ago and by the looks it hadn’t been cleaned in over a decade. Needless to say I was wondering if it would shoot and if it would, would it be safe, I was also thinking if it was too bad I’d find a gun smith to ream it to a 28 gauge. I spent an hour and a half cleaning it and much to my surprise it looked fairly ok and shot it a little at 30 yards just to test it with different powder charges and then realized it needed more cleaning and decided to Brillo pad the bore, it looked like it wanted to shine after that. The gun was shooting way low around 4 inches but good windage wise so the next time I shot it I brought a file and took 25 strokes off the front blade and it brought it up but I didn’t dial it in. It wasn’t until after I got done shooting I noticed it was shredding patches so I got thicker material and changed lubes and this target was the result of those changes and in fact the first shot on the paper was the tenth shot I fired from it since I got it.

If that wasn’t enough I also had a deer sneak up on me within 40 yards as I was shooting, I heard noise in the woods but didn’t think much of it because the woods are thick with squirrels this time of year. I was swabbing the bore when I thought “that sounds like footsteps, is there something watching me” and just as a started to look a deer blew and ran off.

Garypl thank you for putting this shoot on and I’m glad this was just for fun and I can say much fun was had.

Hi! I am new here, so this will be my first time shooting this match. If I understand everything, I just shoot at the target, capture the results on my phone, and upload it here. Any other rules?

Welcome to the group! Rules are posted at the top of this thread and they are simple - shoot rifles at 25 yards offhand and score as indicated on the target. You can shoot as many times as you wish but only post your best target. Score your own targets and write your score on the front (look at some of the past months targets to see examples on how to score). You can optionally shoot from a bench with your rifle and mark your target as "Benchrest." If you are a pistol shooter you can shoot from 15 yards and everything else is the same. Take a picture of your target (and also your gear if you can - we like to see what everyone is shooting!)

This is a fun match and there are no prizes and there is no cost - just have some fun and friendly competition:)

Great story about the gun’s history!

Shot the corn while in Jacksonville, Fla. Saturday, shooting with the monthly BP group, Treaty Oaks, at the Gateway Rifle and pistol club. Pictured is my Hatfield with an L&R lock. They advertise a flint replacement lock, but a phone call to them revealed they could make a percussion lock for me. (Main spring broke on my original, could not find a replacement). A fun target, easily seen but challenging to score, at least for me.

I shot the attached target in Coweta, Oklahoma today with a .40 flintlock that, according to what it reads on the barrel was originally sold by Dixie Gunworks, though made in Italy. I purchased a few years ago from someone on this forum and have taken one turkey and one coyote with it so far. I shot offhand and scored 25 points.
