I started building a Lancaster rifle a few weeks ago. I purchased the stock and components from Track a couple years ago. I’m essentially retired now and I was going stir crazy! I probably would have put it off further but I stumbled upon billraby’s video series on Rumble Lancaster Build. Like you he builds from blocks and he takes you through step by step instructions. So building a rifle is a very slow process. Even when starting with a stock that the lock and barrel channel are partially pre inlet. For me I can see this taking me 6 months. The one thing that I really took heed In from his videos is that it is not hard it just goes very slowly and you need a lot of tools. You have to take your time and think before you do anything. The pre inlet stock doesn’t come without any issues at least with the stock I purchased because I am using a rice swamp barrel and attempting to move it slightly aft for a perfect flash hole location introduced a slightly looser barrel than I like. I had to move the barrel maybe 5/64 of an inch aft to keep from having to notch the butt plug. I’m not a fan of it but know it is common especially with pre inlet stocks. Other than that and I accept this is my first build I will live with it. It is not sloppy loose I trimmed nothing from the sides just went straight down. I have maybe 60 to 80 hours devoted so far and a long way to go. I play his video video as working it. My brother needs my help with something tells me I know you got nothing to do can you stop by tomorrow! 😂 I snapped a picture of the stock in the vice and told him same I started this a month ago and have 60 -80 hours in and months to go! He replies that’s a lot of time! Of course and that’s why the good ones sell for 10 grand; what is your time worth? Hence it’s easy to see why people would shy away from scratch building. I’m keeping my fingers crossed it comes out well I’m taking my time and not rushing anything. Yes over the last few weeks I added a bunch of tools. I have barrel inlet and pinned, lock face installed and butt plate installed. Today I will be lowering the lock plate a bit to close up the pan to barrel gap. Hopefully helping my brother won’t interfere with much. Once you get going I find that time goes by. Thankfully I have the time!

These are really educational. Yep, learning a lot from you here Rob. Though I won’t be able to build a long gun from a plank as you do, maybe a pistol would be something to think about for myself. ( I did one many many years ago- a wheel lock). Watching these is giving me the itch to do another flintlock…

I just love Hershel VDO of building a long rifle , the 91 version . Its great learning from the best and like you said , not a bunch of specialized equipment just basic tools . I built for a few years and never had a band saw ...but stay friendly with yer neighbor that owns one ! His VDO is great and you can stop or review it anytime you want ...highly recommend it . If it weren't for that VDO and Bill Newtons book I would not be building today

Clean out trigger slot ....till it moves freely and is touching the sear ...keep pushing trigger to front and make sure its square with bottom of gun ... as much a possible , can be adjusted later if need be. When trigger is ready to be pinned ...mark front of trigger in mortice ....put lock in mortice , I set them all to half cock , push trigger in and hold , remove lock and mark pin location , punch it ... Lock back in trigger against sear and push forward , hold tight , remove lock , drill spot straight dow n to mark trigger ...pull trigger , drill hole ,reinsert trigger , line it up and drill all way through ...make trigger pin and put it in there ....check out function with lock in and bolted ...any slop will be taken out later , not now ....

Wow !! So sloppy at half cock ...blacken sear and work action ...disassemble ...look at trigger for sot and mark it ...then peen it s little to raise the edge a bit and take out slop ...just a little ... Then try it... Good to go ...

Pick out a pattern , Whately here , then start making a buttplate ...cut it out , grind and file then bend ...

This one is fighting me too ,LOL... They all just want to go back to being a tree :) . I should have had the buttplate on and making the trigger guard today but just got back from a giant flea market they have here twice a year ... Found an old original 20ga. barrel ....
