Why do a lot of mountain man knife sheaths I see on ML sites have additional leather on the sides with a slot cut in it?

A good sheath for a high carbon blade will be made of wood, with leather on the outside.
The leather directly will leach into the steel.

I’ve had knives in leather sheaths for 50 years and not once had any problems with blades getting corroded from the leather. Veg tan is definitely the way to go. I did just finish a patch knife with a wooden sheath liner wrapped in buckskin.

All my fine steel is in wooden sheaths, they came that way for that very reason.
Highly polished steel stains from the chemicals in the leather.
Ive had my blades for decades and they still look like new.
