Muzzleloader research project.50

I'm posting this as a long term self project of mine. There Is all too much in fighting about this and that with no proof of anything. I ask that anyone who is willing to participate hear me out. Every animal you take with a muzzleloader should be documented here. Caliber distance shot distance ran projectile amount of powder and gun. This way we can form a bit of evidence to backup claims and help some newbies out. Please feel free to describe performance but no gore for the sake of keeping muzzleloading in a good light.

24" 1:48 twist CVA 54 cal 375 gr solid Deerslayer conical 100 grains of RS pyrodex 85 yards.

Broke left shoulder leg bone below joint, passed through heart, lungs and lodged between ribs under skin, far side. Spun on her heels, went 20 yards and died. Zero blood loss, had to search for entry wound.

I'm very surprised you didn't get an exit. I'm suspecting the lack of blood trail was because of no exit still quite impressive.

Concur. That performance is why I am working on a Thumper Carbine. I want to get a heavier bullet and I want through and through penetration for a blood trail. That was a perfect shot...if it had been less than perfect and it didn't exit, I would have never have found her as there were lots of fresh elk tracks and thick brush the way she was headed. I calculated that 375 gr load had about 1150 ftlbs of energy at 85 yards.

My performance parameter goals are: 100 yard zero with 3" or less groups, 125 yard 3" drop maximum, minimum of 1150 ftlbs (I would like 1250 ftlbs) of energy at 125 yards.

So far this 54 cal 450 gr load looks promising, as does the 485 gr load.

What "proof" are you lacking?

I ment I would like to have a place for pepole to come and see actual evidence. Some pepole think you cant kill a deer unless you use a 300gn bullet with 150gns of powder.

Pushing it slower might give you better penetration. As counter intuitive as it is. If it expands slightly less it might pass through. If that fails I would cast slightly harder.

In a day when the Left is looking to ban every gun under the sun, including lead projectiles, the last thing I would do is post calibers, gory details and pictures to prove muzzleloading "Wound Performance".

Muzzleloaders fly under the radar.

Let's keep it that way.

So do we just let pepole be uneducated. Shall we hunt deer with .32 prb because "way back when my paw paw took deer at 100 yards with his 32" I hate to say it there is a good bit of this out there I'm just trying to organize it into some valid research.

Has nothing to with people remaining uneducated.

Has to do with blood and guts for the sake of blood and guts.

No one, especially the Anti-Gun gun grabbers that frequent every gun forum in America, needs pictures of proven "Wound Performance".

You don't need blood, guts and gore to discuss successful load data.

And it's not to prove the wounding performance. Its showing loads that work. Bullets that work. So you dont have to go hmm I wonder if this will humanely take a deer. Bc somone else has tried it and can prove it.

"Evidence to back up claims" is Proof.

This post is not about proving anything. It's not about proving how deadly xyz is. Its about helping pepole out. Yes I did ask about wounding AND performance " and being the key word. But that is not what the post is about.

I hate doing this as much as anyone else but you are right. It is not strictly necessary for pictures of the blood and gore. I just wanted to make a page dedicated to culminating information. And I appreciate you pointing out my flaw and I apologize for seeming snapy.
