Schuetzen vs Goex

I’m on my last can of 3f Goex. This summer I bought several pounds of Schuetzen 3f. Having read on here different opinions on the two, I went to the range tonight and compared them.

I was shooting my Kibler SMR.36. I shot a 5 shot group with Goex. Swabbed my barrel and switched to Schuetzen. I shot another 5 shot group. Then 5 more offhand. The groups were the same. Loading was no different EXCEPT I had no crud ring at the breech with Schuetzen but I always do with Goex.

I was pleasantly surprised as I’ve read many posts about how much dirtier Schuetzen is.

Next I’m going to take my .32 and try it again with it.

Thought maybe you guys would be interested in my little test.

Pretty much what I have found. I think I'm on my 3rd or 4th case of Schutzen now.

Good to know still have GOEX, but I will try the Schuetzen

My experience also. No noticeable difference in performance between the two. A chrono or scientific study might show a difference. But, if it works, it works without the science. FWIW I have trouble getting good groups with Swiss.

Interesting. I haven’t tried Swiss yet.

Years ago, bought some Schutzen and we all found it was no dirtier, but we all needed 10-15% more for group consistency. Current Schutzen is equal to Goex. Are they ever going to start shipping product again?

Current production Scheutzen is equivalent to "Red Can" Goex.

Very cool !

Swiss and Olde Eynsford are undeniably superior powders. Grain-for-grain they bring greater velocity and shoot cleaner. You can even tell when someone's shooting them by the sweet smell. A very recognizable scent...mmmmm
If you're shooting an important contest or attending the hunt of a lifetime,..having the best is worth it!

But on the other hand, it's quite hard to justify wasting such premium rifle powder on a camp-out, at a woods walk, or a piece of paper.

Scheutzen, Wano, Graf's, red-can Goex, KIK, Jack's Battle powder, ect, ect,.... they all make your gun go boom. And when you're standing tall, shooting offhand, one powder will shoot just as well as the next... I don't even pay any attention to what I dump in my horn... because they'll all shoot just fine and dandy.

I still have several pounds of Goex. I quit using Goex after discovering Schuetzen & Swiss.
Schuetzen shoots as good as Goex. Neither one is as good as Swiss though.

The main reason why I quit using Goex is....cleaning.
When I clean the Schuetzen & Swiss.....about 6-7 minutes is all it takes to clean my guns.
It took 20+ minutes ( sometimes 30+ ) to clean the Goex out of my guns.
Nastiest powder to clean among the three.
I'll keep on shooting what's available.

Goex has Old E and regular (Scheutzen equivalent). Here's an older pic of the "red can" before plastic bottles-

Thanks. I wasn’t sure if red can was different than plastic bottle Goex. You’re differentiating it from Old E. Got it!

Wano is either rebranded Schuetzen or is made by them. It‘s really all that is available in Queensland.

I used only Goex when I lived in the States and I think Wano is a little better overall, especially the “P” grades. However I haven’t used Goex for a long long time so my comparison from memory may be invalid.

I have to because just like gasoline, black powder companies make different grades. Goex is just a brand like Esso or BP and each have different grades of their products.

I used to shoot Old E before changing over to Swiss because there was a distributor within 25 miles of my home. When they were sold, the new owner dropped all things black powder. The choice between Old E and Swiss was driven at the time only because of availability since the distributor carried Old E and not Swiss. Now I buy all my powder from Back Creek and because of Goex refusal to support youth black powder shooting, it's Swiss all the way because Scheutzen does support youth black powder shooting. The price difference is negligible between the two and performance of Swiss is a bit better.

Not only support youth black powder shooting, Swiss/Schuetzen supports BP shooting in general. They give away FREE powder to clubs around the country as prizes, give away powder at Friendship at the National Shoots and also give away 25 pounds in an annual contest giveaway.
That's another reason why I support them.

Everyone will be doing this test, unless Goex gets back into production. I have been running Schuetzen for over a year now and no issues.
Just think folks, in the United States of American we have only zero black powder manufactures currently.

I took my .32 Crockett to the range today and shot Goex and Schuetzen through it. With my two .32’s I’ve always swabbed every shot or two. I started with Goex and swabbed every two shots. Then I cleaned it and switched to Schuetzen. I just kept shooting without having to swab every shot or two.

I’ll be squirrel hunting this fall with Schuetzen!

Yep...I have the same testimony.
Schuetzen is much easier to clean.
