A wood lathe is nice to have and definitely speeds things up, but not required.
Bust out some wood rasps, scrapers and sandpaper and go to town on that thing.
Fitting a plug is like inletting a barrel. Find your tight spots and remove a little bit wood.
Rinse. Repeat. Until you have well fitted plug.

Thanks guys, Ive actually found some pretty good videos on youtube. This powderhorn isnt going to be 100% period correct, I got ahold of one of those polished India buffalo Horns on etsy, pretty color but I doubt its anywhere period correct, I can see horns like that maybe being imported into England at the time but I doubt a mountain man would have toted one around. Maybe it will fit/ look the part. For my staple, I fire blued an electrical staple so it resembles iron, I might hand make the plug from some scrap juniper tree wood behind my house, havent decided yet...

Check out the wonderful books by Scott Sibley.
I think @PathfinderNC may have done either a tutorial or a picture-heavy thread about one of his powder horn builds a few weeks or months ago. It was very well done, as I recall.

Pathfinder does great work, and he did a fine job on this tutorial. Better than any YouToob you are likely to find.

Those are some nice horns you have to start with. Just a suggestion - drill the hole in the spout before you put much work in the horn/base plug. If you drill out the side or outside of the curve, you will save some time and creative language lessons. The three in the picture should be easy to drill as they don't have much curve. Have fun.

Last year I had bought a horn on eBay and drilled through the side. I ordered your cureton kit last summer and sold it with one of my shooting bags. I like your horns, will be definitely buying a completed cureton from you again soon!

That’s exactly how I make my powder horn bases, I’ve never turned a one. I rather enjoy taking my time on filing the base plugs, it’s almost therapeutic in a way. Now I’ve purchased a horn that had a turned base plug, that one I simply assembled and worked the horn body to my satisfaction. In the end, it’s your project and you can do it the way you want to, but just know a wood lathe isn’t absolutely needed.
